This little island with a history that spans over thousands of years is packed with many historical and magnificent spots. Here are a few that shouldn't be missed.

1

Yala National Park

This is the most famous and the second largest national park out of the 8 wildlife parks present in the country. It is here that one has a higher chance of spotting the famous Sri Lankan leopard species. With more than 40 species of mammals, 47 species of reptiles and 215 bird species, the park is a major attraction to those who love wildlife and nature.

2

Galle

This is a small southern coastal town that has preserved the colonial charm- from cobble-stoned streets to the Dutch-era architecture of villas and buildings, there's something so peaceful and mesmerizing about this town. The Dutch Fort, also known as the Galle Fort, is known to be the largest sea fort in the whole of Asia and is one of the World Heritage Sites. A walk around the Fort during the hours of sunset is one of the most recommended things to do in Sri Lanka. The town is easily accessible via train or busses and is only less than 2 hours away from the main city of Colombo, thus making it a perfect spot to go on a quick getaway.

3

Sigiriya

Sigiriya, which translates into "Lion's Rock" is essentially a Fortress that was built on a rock during 477-495 CE under the rule of King Kashyapa. The sheer complex architectural design that interlocks the natural surroundings with the man-made ideas and the water gardens that were built during the time, was far advanced during that particular area and is still considered as an engineering marvel. One of the most striking features of the rock are the frescoes that decorate the many walls inside the fortress. Sigiriya is one of the must-visit historical sites in the country. Should you prefer a personalized tour of the historical sites or other main attractions, you can opt for a tour guide like Walkers Tours to curate the perfect itinerary.

4

Ella

Ella is another quaint town situated in the central highlands amidst the luscious tea plantations and mountainous range. It has increasingly become popular among the locals and tourists and therefore, to cater to the crowd, the town has adapted itself with many restaurants, cafes, and pubs. Ella is a haven for those who love hiking- Ella Rock, the nine-arch bridge and the mini Adam's peak are some of the mandatory spots that one must visit. Just a little further away from Ella is the Diyaluma falls, the second largest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Hiking up this waterfall is an adrenaline pumping experience that will satiate any avid hiker and adventure seeker.

5

Kandy

It is the second largest city in Sri Lanka and is the last capital of the ancient kingdoms. Located in the central province, it is both an administrative and religious city. Home to one of the most sacred places in the history of Buddhism- the Dalada Maligawa; also known as the Temple of the Tooth as it houses the holy relic of Lord Buddha. One of the best times to visit this city would be during the Esala Perehera festival which falls during the summer.
