List of things to do in Yangon during the weekend – The rhythm of Yangon

Yangon is one of Myanmar's most exciting cities. There are plenty of interesting spiritual sites as well as exotic markets to browse for goods and of course delicious food.

1

Visit a local fresh market

There is no better way to feel the heartbeat of a city than a visit to a local fresh market. You can get to know so much about the local culture and of course feast your eyes on fresh produce. There are plenty of fresh markets in Yangon. You can visit the Thiri Mingalar market to look at wholesale produce and enjoy an action-packed atmosphere. You can, of course, ask your hotel in Yangon to recommend a nearby fresh produce market to avoid a long walk or a drive. The market of Street 26 is a good place to experience local culture.

2

Shwedagon Pagoda

The Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the key religious sites not only in Yangon but also the entire country. The pagoda is famous for its golden chedi that shimmers in the sunlight. The chedi is 99 meters in height and an imposing presence throughout the city. When you visit the pagoda, you'll be able to see many people engaged in numerous rituals. This will provide you with a glimpse into the cultural beliefs of Myanmar. If you are spending the weekend at a place such as the Sedona Hotels Yangon, the Shwedagon Pagoda will be within the reach of a half an hour's drive.

3

Bogyoke Aung San Market

Bogyoke Aung San market was formerly called the Scott market. It was built in 1926 based on a design from the British period. You can buy exquisite jewellery, Burmese traditional clothing and handicrafts at this market. The market is a mix of European looking cobblestone streets and a bazaar on the inside.

4

Chinatown Yangon

Yangon's Chinatown is located west of the less famous but culturally significant Sule Pagoda which is in downtown Yangon. The area is a pulsating hub of activity with vendors busily selling fresh produce and delectable food. If you get peckish as you browse for goods, go towards the 20th street. There you will find plenty of Chinese food. Fill your belly with a savoury rice congee and munch on grilled pork skewers. If you want to experience nightlife in Chinatown, go to the 19th street after dusk. You can hang out with locals and tourists alike and drink. 19th street is also famous for barbeque food. The best time to visit the market is around 5 pm in the evening when the rhythm of the entire area goes up a notch and things truly start to happen.

5

Relax at Kandawgyi Park

Once you've explored the busy downtown area of Yangon, take to the green and serene Kandawgyi Park. You can walk across the lake's boardwalk to gaze at the lake and at the view of the Shwedagon Pagoda. You can escape the noise and the friendly chaos of the city. If you get hungry, go to the eastern section of the park to sit at a lakeside restaurant and leisurely tuck into comfort food.
