Surfing spots in Sri Lanka – Ride the waves of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a well renowned location for surfing and below is a list of the surfing sports in Sri Lanka.

1

Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is by the far the most loved beach by all suffers who have visited Sri Lanka at least once. During the season the waves are so great that you wouldn't want to come to the shore even for the shortest break. Hikkaduwa is located about 80 kilometres from Colombo and about 20 kilometres from Galle and with the southern express highway it doesn't take much long to travel to Hikkaduwa. The surfing culture has picked up in Hikkaduwa and what used to be a simple village is now a party city revolving around surfing and other water sports in Sri Lanka. Hikkaduwa is also popular for snorkelling, body boarding, diving and even water boarding so it is not just for the surfers.

2

Unawatuna

Unawatuna is known to be a good location for surfing for both professional, experienced surfers as well as beginners. Unawatuna is also great for family vacations and there are surfing lessons for all age groups. The surfing culture is pretty strong around Unawatuna as well and the hotels and resorts host many beach parties during the season. Some of the best spots for surfing around Unawatuna are the Unawatuna Beach Break, the Dalawella Reef, Bonavista Bay and the Kabalana Beach Break.

3

Weligama

Weligama is a beach that won't disappoint the surfers. There are great waves all year round except for when it is pouring during the monsoon season. The beach is perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers as the waves are forgiving and not as harsh as Hikkaduwa. The main stretch which is about two kilometres have many surfing schools and locations where you can rent the equipment from. The area is not as outgoing and brewing with excitement when compared to Hikkaduwa or Unawatuna but it is only a matter of time till Weligama also becomes a party city.

4

Arugam Bay

Arungam bay located in the far- east is a preferred surfing spot when the southern is soaked up by the rain. The town is not as developed as the three previous locations but there are plenty of locals who are surfers and the surfing culture is picking up. The Elephant rock, Baby Point and Main point, Pottuvil and Whisky point are some of the different locations that are ideal for surfing around Arugam bay. Travelling to Arugam Bay is not the easiest as there is no direct train or a highway that leads up to the location. Sea Plane rides are available through Cinnamon Air which is the most comfortable and convenient transport method and you get the added advantage of having a bird's eye view of stunning Ceylon.

5

Mirissa

Mirissa is also a good surfing location but not as developed and the waves are somewhat unpredictable. The location is best suited for experienced surfers as the waves can be rather unforgiving. The beach is lined with palm and coconut trees making it a picturesque location to go surfing at.
