List of Things to do in Dickwella – When you are Not Chasing Waves

Dickwella is a lovely little coastal town in the Matara district of Sri Lanka. Sitting on the south coast of the island, the area is loved for its gorgeous beaches and abundant breaks. But Dickwella is not just sun, sand and surf (on a board) kind of place; there's more, read on and learn.

1

Enjoy Diving in Dickwella

Head over to Polhena Reef which is very popular for its sea bathing allures and boasts a protective reef which forms a kind of safety ring around the shallow waters. This natural reef is ideal to explore and scuba diving enthusiasts will find the verdant coral reef harbours a number of fascinating marine life. The area is pretty hip too, with lots of sunny cafes and restaurants to chill at once done with your dive and swim. Dickwella is home to some of the best beach hotels in Sri Lanka and you will find lots of airy and comfy accommodation right on the beach if you explore places like Dickwella Resort & Spa; which is less than 30kms from Polhena Reef.

2

Leave the Beach for a Day and Explore Yala

Yala is Sri Lanka's most famous national park. A super exciting wildlife sanctuary the bio-diversity of the park alone is enough to impress. You will find rocky outcrops, glistening lagoons, muddy marshes, savannah-like scrubland and wild exotic beaches where elephants roam, within this marvellous piece of nature. The wildlife is incomparable and varied, home to one of Asia's largest collection of leopards, the place boasts, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and a staggering collection of bird species. Yala is located in Hambantota, 3 hours from your hotel in Dickwella and makes for the perfect day out.

3

Soak Up the Culture

The famous Wevurukannala Buddha statue is not only popular for its enormous size, but for the stupendous views across the land. You must climb to the top of the hill via a flight of stone stairs; it's fully worth it though since you get to drink in the rustic beauty of the land and enjoy the peace and quiet. The Wevurukannala temple is just 2 minutes from the Dickwella city centre and must be explored for a taste of local culture.

4

Explore the City of Gods – Devinwara

The city of Devinwara – devi meaning 'gods' – has three significant points; the place is lauded as being important historically, geographically and having religious significance. The vintage buildings and remaining ruins are a testimony to how important the town was at one time, while the surviving temple shows that religion was of utmost importance. Whether you are a culture buff, art lover of historian this site promises to impress and a great place to explore when you decide you want time away from the beach – although it's hardly likely – still, schedule in time to explore these places not too far from sunny Dickwella resorts!
