A proper gun safe is a must if you’re a gun owner. It’s important to keep your firearms out of untrained hands, and out of sight when burglars come knocking. But which gun safe is better, the one with a dial lock or a keypad?
Manual dial locks have a relatively low speed of access, and the ease of access can be somewhat difficult because you are required to remember a pattern or direction to turn the dial. Manual dial locks also use more digits than electronic locks. And unless you’re nocturnal, you’ll need enough light to be able to see the numbers on the dial.
In order to secure the lock after closing the door, you must spin the dial. Forget to do this and any thief can easily reopen it. Another disadvantage to a manual dial lock is that if you ever desire to change the combination, you’ll have to hire a locksmith to do it. Major advantages include rare lock failure, few theft issues, cheaper cost and a lifespan of a hundred years or more. You could pass your gun safe and all its contents down your family line for as many generations as it will last!
Electronic keypad locks are faster than dial locks, and easier to access. They require fewer digits and usually have a lit keypad which you can use in the dark. And as soon as the door closes, it secures. No spinning, no fuss. Finally, if you want to change the password combination, you can do it yourself at home.
A few disadvantages to the electronic keypad lock include wear pattern on the keypad (which can help thieves figure out your code), lock failure or defects (which are rare, but they happen), and the fact that you have to change the batteries every now and then. They also tend to be slightly more expensive than gun safes with dial locks, and have a warranty of approximately 10 to 15 years (or more, if the model is particularly fancy).
