My adopted bacterium that i would like to share is Neisseria meningitidis. it does not really have an interesting bright color or special shape, but I am interesting in it because I have been once a victim of its causing disease, migraine. I would like to know more about it and share this information with everybody.
Neisseria meningitidis, often referred to as meningococcus, ia an aerobic, gram negative bacteria which is encapsulated by an antiphagocytic capsule for its virulence. Neisseria meningitidis best grows on selective media, Mueller-Hinton or enriched media such as chocolate at 37 degrees and 5-10% of carbon dioxide. The chocolate media is not the chocolate that we are used to eating but rather boiled or heated blood that has turned into a brown chocolate color. the incubation period of this bacteria is approximately 3-4 days. Neisseria meningitidis has a catalase and oxidase activity but lacks superoxidase dimutase.
For its metabolism, it requires mineral salts, lactate, some amino acids such as cysteine and glutamic acid an a carbon source. iron is also a requirement which acts as an electron acceptor.
Neisseria meningitidis lives at the back of the nose and throat (mocosal membranes ). It is a harmless bacterial adapted to humans but a ferocious pathogen causing, sometimes, lethal diseases upon continuous reinfection. Meningococcus causes meningitis, which is an inflammation of the membranes (menings) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is transmitted through airborne droplets (by coughing and sneezing) and much quicker through contact (kissing). humans are the only reservoirs of this bacteria.

Toxins released by the bacteria during its exponential growth are the ones that cause the disease. Upon entry, it uses its pilli to attach and adhere in the respiratory linings and infects deeper into the tissue until it gains entry into the bloodstream and travels to the menings of the brain and spinal cor to cause an infection.
