THE METAL ION REDUCING BACTERIA - this type of bacteria seems to only be doing good things for its environment and could do really great things if it was used
I chose to adopt Shewanella oneidensis because of all of the potential it has. The fact that it can generate electricity and could be an alternative source of electricity really makes it interesting. Also the fact that it could also be used for wastewater treatment.
Shewanella oneidensis can live with or without oxygen (facultative anaerobe)
It can be found in deep oceans and sediments and soil.
It is gram negative and rod shaped. The bacteria have flagella for motility
This bacterium was first isolated in 1988
Shewanella oneidensis has a cytochrome outer membrane which has proteins that are used to transfer the electrons from itself to the iron / metal ion that needs to be reduced. They are exoelectrogens
This bacteria also generates electricity which could be used as a source of energy. This is because of the cytochrome which can transform and store energy. This bacteria is also special because it can absorb heavy metal ions
you will discover what cytochrome is and get an idea of its structure and information on a few of the different forms it can have....
This type of bacteria allows other organisms to use Iron, which is essential for life, by unlocking the iron that is found in the environment. This takes place through reduction. The bacteria donates a negatively charged electron to the positively charge Iron ion. This takes place using the cytochrome. The cytochrome transfers the electron to Iron ion.
This bacteria could also be used for wastewater treatment because it can absorb heavy metal ions
This link explains the importance of Iron and explains how Shewanella oneidensis makes it available for use.
Shewanella oneidensis is a bacterium notable for its ability to reduce metal ions and live in environments with or without oxygen. This proteobacterium was first isolated from Lake Oneida, NY in 1988, whence its name.[1]
Humans aren’t the only ones who have harnessed the power of electricity. Some bacteria do this, too, by producing structures that extend from their surface l...
Shewanella oneidensis is a bacterium which can reduce poisonous heavy metal ions and can live in both environments with or without oxygen.
Shewanella oneidensis - rod shaped bacteria that transfers electrons therefore reducing heavy metal ions therefore making it good for wastewater treatment and could also generate electricity
