Being a collection of islands, the Maldives has quite a variety of types of islands to explore. When you take on an island-hopping tour, you are signing up to explore the different facets of the archipelago. There are resort islands where the only structure on the island is a luxury resort. Then there are local islands where the local community live and go about their day. Then there are uninhabited islands, which are mostly forest, beach, or a combination thereof, and a place where you are likely to have plenty of time all to yourself. You can even go on a trek or a hike on one of these islands, and sit down for a picnic meal. A usual island hopping package will take you to three to four different island types.
