Most Popular Homemade Window Cleaners to Try

Cleaning the windows can’t really qualify as a pleasant job, but it sure is an important one. Proper maintenance means extending the window cleaning beyond the spring cleaning. Window washing should be done at least 2-3 times a year, as weather conditions and local environment can also affect the frequency. Regardless, getting the best results would be easier when you have the right solution.

1

Vinegar / water

Vinegar has become the number one house cleaning helper and it is really useful for making the windows sparkly again. Combine equal amounts of vinegar and lukewarm water, but make sure to mix well in a spray bottle. Apply enough of the solution to cover the glass and use a cotton rag to spread it nicely.

Next comes the polishing, which can be done with an old newspaper or a clean microfibre cloth. Heavily polluted windows can be pre-washed with soapy water for better results.

2

Dishwashing liquid / water / vinegar / essential oils

If you want to give your window cleaner a boost, then add dishwashing liquid (liquid soap can work, too) and preferably 5-6 drops of tea tree essential oil. The latter is preferred as a well- known bacteria killer, but you can try a citrus oil like lemon, as well.

If you want to do a really good wash, then use a bucket instead of a spray bottle. This will allow you to really moisten the cloth regularly, along with the windows. The amount of the ingredients can be adjusted depending on the amount of solution you need. In any case, don’t be too generous with the dishwashing liquid or you are in for excessive polishing.

Rubbing alcohol / water / soap

Living in a suburban area inevitably affects the condition of a home, especially the windows, which are constantly exposed to dust and heavy pollution. Proper regular cleaning and maintenance can improve the domestic environment and extend the lifespan of the windows by preventing glass damages.

A solution of 1 part rubbing alcohol and 2-3 parts of soapy water is quite effective for tackling any tough stains and thick layers of dust. Remember to definitely wear gloves for this one, as the rubbing alcohol could irritate softer or damaged skin.

4

Lemon juice / water

If you are sensitive to smells, then this window cleaner is a better option. While it doesn’t require a lot of ingredients, it is still effective and could be used for a quick wash. Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to 1 part water and stir. The juice pretty much works like the vinegar by dissolving the grime and making the windows nice and shiny. Plus, there is the nice and fresh lemon scent.

Keep in mind that you need real lemon juice and not one from a bottle. Also, lemon juice and lemon essential oil are not the same thing and they could affect the glass in a different way. Whenever you add essential oil, make sure to add vinegar or another grease dissolving agent, as well.

5

Water / ammonia

Water / ammonia

Low-concentration ammonia could be effective for tackling the window grime, as it can effectively destroy greasy stains. One part water can be mixed with 1 tablespoon of ammonia in a spray bottle for the purpose. Remember to put on gloves first and protect your eyes during the cleaning. Also, avoid adding vinegar or other acid for boosting the mixture. The ammonia is strong enough to provide good cleaning results and may react with another product in an unexpected way.

There is always the possibility to mix and match the different ingredients mentioned above to create a window cleaner that satisfies you best. Remember to take caution and research just in case before experimenting.
