Historical Museums at Mauritius – A journey into the yesteryears of Mauritius

Mauritius is a place that is rich in both natural as well as historic attractions. To see it all under one roof there are museums that depict the best of both worlds. Below are some popular names

1

The Blue Penny Museum

Dedicated to both local art and history, the Blue Penny Museum is a must visit if you are interested in such attractions. Located in Port Louis the museum can be found at the Caudan Waterfront and is a convenient and interesting stopover while exploring the picturesque area. The Blue Penny Museum first opened its doors in the year 2001 and since then has been a very popular attraction among both local and foreign history buffs. The highlight of the museum is the 1847 Blue Penny and Red Penny stamps which were purchased in the year 1993 for a grand total of $2,000,000. In an attempt to preserve the quality of the stamps, they are illuminated only on a temporary basis. As for the most part, only copies can be seen. In addition to the collection of varying artefacts housed at the museum, this place is also home to the original Paul and Virginia statue which was created in the year 1881 by Prosper d'Épina

2

Mahebourg Museum

This museum is just as appealing on the outside as it is on the inside for the building that has been converted into the museum was one that was constructed during the 1700s at the time of the colonial era in Mauritius. The building by itself has a historic significance for it is the very place where English and French leaders met here, became friends and worked out the future of Mauritius in a cooperative way instead of fighting. The Mahebourg Museum is separated into 2 large subdivided rooms. In each area, you find a wide collection of naval artefacts and other interesting paintings and random historic items. There is also an original railway carriage outside which may particularly appeal to younger visitors.

3

Château de Labourdonnais

If you want to go back time to 19th century Mauritius, this is one of the most remarkable attractions out there. Set up in an 1859 grand mansion that has beautifully been restored, the Château de Labourdonnais takes you on a journey through this colourful era in the history of Mauritius. There is a treasure-trove of various artefacts to see here in addition to the impressive architecture of the building. Even if you are staying at The Residence Mauritius by Cenizaro or any one of the best resorts in Mauritius located at a distance from this attraction, it is worth making a trip here.

4

Musee du Coquillage

In a nutshell, this museum is a collection of shells. The entrance is very cheap and the collection of shells is diverse and impressive. In fact, there are about 700 species of shells and several of them are truly spectacular.

5

Natural history museum

This is an interesting museum that was founded all the way back in 1880. The highlight of this museum is the exhibit of the dodo which has been extinct for over 3 centuries. There is also a library here which has a collection of over 50,000 books.
