Best Things to do in the Maldives - A checklist for the new traveller

The Maldives has been named a favourite travel destination for many years. There are freshness and beauty to the archipelago, and many things to do, that one can never tire of it.

The Maldives is well-known for its great underwater world. It is a place that has made it to many best diving spots in the world lists. The best thing about diving in the Maldives is that it is a great place for beginners and children. The water currents are not too strong, and the visibility is quite high. Best of all, many independent centres teach diving, while you can get a PADI dive certification at many a luxury resort in the Maldives. You will see stingrays, turtles, and sharks in your dives not to mention the colourful array of corals.

If the deep sea worries you, but you still wish to swim with the fish, snorkelling is your thing to do. There are multiple snorkelling spots spread throughout the area, some public and some belonging to private properties like hotels. For example, Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas has a house reef that is accessible only to their guests. These reefs are a great place to see colourful fish, turtles, and even manta rays. The snorkelling sessions are usually educational as well, with an instructor giving you information on all the creatures and plants you will see.

Island Hopping

Considering that the Maldives is a collection of islands, island hopping is a natural thing to do. However, you would be surprised at how few tourists actually do this excursion. There are three types of islands in the archipelago: private islands which are usually where luxury resorts are located, public islands where the Maldivians live, and uninhabited islands. You can make a day trip of island hopping as you explore all three types of islands. The ride from one island to the next is as thrilling as the diversity you will notice from island to island.

Spa day

It is not for nothing that the Maldives has been declared one of the top luxury travel destinations. It is quite popular for its pampering rituals, thus having a spa day is among the must-do things in the Maldives. Depending on your personal preferences and your budget, you can opt for a relaxing day of pampering overlooking the white sand of the beach while the ocean waves provide the necessary background music. Alternatively, you can opt for Balinese massages or Ayurveda massages.

While there is nothing wrong in running about doing many of the exciting activities that the islands have to offer, one of the best things to do in the Maldives is to sit back, relax, and slow down. It is a place where time slows down if you allow it to. So, grab yourself a cocktail or a refreshing juice, and sit by the sand and watch the waves. Or sit on the beach as the night falls and watch the night sky come to life. There is nothing better for the busy traveller who has been working their day away than to take a moment to breathe in the glorious environs of the Maldives.
