All over Sri Lanka, you will encounter reminders of its glorious past. The statues, stone structures, rocky outcrops and glorious temples attest to a flourishing realm that goes back 2000 years.

1

Sigiriya

Located in the Matale district, Sigiriya is a man-made fortress which bears witness to the short-lived reign of King Kassapa. The rocky outcrop is a world heritage site which is visited by locals and foreigner in equal numbers. The morning time is when it becomes the most spectacular sight in Sri Lanka – the rising sun casting its soft rays all over the colossal ancient ruins makes Sigiriya singularly splendid at dawn.

2

Anuradhapura

Centuries ago, the ancient city Anuradhapura was the capital city where all the kings took their residence –and now it has become a cornerstone of Sri Lankan culture. Buddhist pilgrims consider the city to be the holiest city in the country. From a touristic point of view, what makes the city alluring is its many historical monuments that include Jetavanaramaya, Isurumuniya Vihara, Ruwanwelisaya, Sri Maha Bodhi and many other natural attractions. Visiting Anuradhapura gives you the opportunity to sight Sri Lankan wildlife as well. As it has become a tourist destination, there are plenty of places where you can eat, drink and lodge.

3

Kandy

Situated in the upcountry, Kandy bears great importance not only in terms of religion but also concerning Sri Lankan culture and heritage. The city's popularity among tourists is down to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Botanical Gardens and Esala Perahera. The second largest city in Sri Lanka is the capital city of the central province and is oftentimes visited by Buddhists. Most foreigners on the other hand – particularly when it comes to Sri Lanka travel – go for holiday packages which include visiting Kandy - with tour companies such as Nkar Travel House. Visiting Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and enjoying Kandyan dancing and drum shows are a few things you can do while in Kandy.

4

Dambulla

The long list of things to do is what draws foreigners into the city – and to locals, Dambulla is a place of historical and religious significance. The largest cave complex in the world and the rose quartz are found in this ancient city. Inside the cave temple, there are 153 skilfully carved Buddha statues and various paintings depicting the life of Buddha.

5

Yapahuwa

The city gives evidence to medieval Sri Lanka. Located in between Anuradhapura and Kurunegala, the Yapahuwa citadel was built around a huge boulder – which is over a hundred meters above sea level. Between 1272 and 1284 – during king Buvanekabahu's reign – Yapahuwa was the capital city especially because the rock fortress gave protection against foreign invaders. It is also said that, at a time, this was where the king hid the sacred tooth relic. Among the many attractions that draw people into the city are the ornamental staircase, paintings, sentinel lion stone sculpture, Buddha statues and other sculptures of various deities.
