The tea produced here is sharper than tea grown in the cooler regions of Sri Lanka; this type of tea is a very popular export product to the Middle East. There is a lot to do in Galle, beyond the tea plantations. The area is famous for its beaches, and indeed, many beautiful beaches can be found in this region. The most famous site in Galle is the Galle Fort, which has been preserved incredibly well since it was built in the Colonial era. The Fort is filled with shops with lots of goodies, and restaurants serving tasty dishes. Galle is very accessible from Colombo via the highway, and so many locals take a day trip to this beautiful area.
