Academy Award winners Sir Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson star in the golden age of the Hollywood studio era film adaptation of Jane Austin's classic novel Pride and Prejudice.
The socially conscious Mrs. Bennet, with the begrudging help of her husband, sets out to find suitable--and suitably rich--husbands for her five daughters. The already difficult project becomes even more complicated when Mrs. Bennet's strongest-willed daughter, Elizabeth, decides to pursue rich and handsome, but cynical and boorish, Mr. Darcy. But Elizabeth will only win Mr. Darcy on her own terms--and only after exacting genteel revenge for his initial indifference toward her in this story of romance, wit and manners.
"Anyone accustomed to the 1995 miniseries version of Pride and Prejudice will need to adjust to the swifter demands of a two-hour movie, and to be sure this version, like the 2005 Keira Knightley remake, simplifies some of Austen's scenes. Edmund Gwenn is lovely as Mr. Bennet, and Mary Boland brash as Mrs. Bennet; Garson, although MGM liked to corset her in fine-lady roles, manages to let Elizabeth's sauciness come through. Actually, the movie's weak spot is Laurence Olivier's elaborate performance as Darcy, which feels too theatrical. Not that it matters; Austen's story is so good, the film sails through to its delicious finish with all flags flying." - Robert Horton
Cedric Gibbons and Paul Groesse won the Oscar for Interior Decoration.
Starring Greer Garson, Laurence Olivier, Mary Boland, Edna May Oliver, Maureen O'Sullivan.

Among the first television studio productions from the BBC, Pride and Prejudice (1938) was the first book they brought to screen. Sadly, no footage from the one-hour TV movie has survived, as it was never recorded. The script for the broadcast (from the movie's director Michael Barry) survives at the BBC’s Written Archives. The film and script are available from Wisconsin Historical Society Archives / Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research.
In 1952, Cedric Wallis adapted Pride and Prejudice for BBC television. Directed by Campbell Logan, the action takes place in the drawing-room at Longbourn; the Assembly Rooms at Meryton; and the drawing-room at Netherfield. Starring Thea Holme as Jane Austen, Daphne Slater as Elizabeth Bennet, Peter Cushing as Mr. Darcy, Milton Rosmer as Mr. Bennet, and Gillian Lind as Mrs. Bennet. The six episodes were never recorded, but publicity stills exist.
In 1958, the same Cedric Wallis screenplay was used for a new BBC production with a new cast, with Alan Badel as Mr. Darcy and Jane Downs as Elizabeth. The six episodes were directed by Barbara Burnham. The series was recorded, but all episodes are lost.
In 1956, NBC adapted the classic for a second time for television. The live performance for the NBC Matinee Theater anthology series starred Marcia Henderson as Elizabeth, and Anthony Dearden as Mr. Darcy. The script (which has a modern tone) survives at the NYPL, but the film - which may have been in color - is believed to be lost.

The BBC adapted Pride and Prejudice for the 4th time in 1967. The 6-episode, black and white series, was penned by Nemone Lethbridge, and focused on "three main romantic plotlines: the love developing between Elizabeth Bennet (Celia Bannerman) and Mr. Darcy (Lewis Fiander); the relationship between Jane (Polly Adams) and Mr Bingley (David Savile); and Lydia's (Lucy Fleming) scandalous 'engagement'." Clips and a full episode are available to watch online for registered BFI users. Directed by Joan Craft (David Copperfield, BBC, 1966).

The glorious world of Jane Austen is at last brought back to the big screen in all its romance, wit, and emotional force in Pride & Prejudice. Faithful to the setting and period of the beloved novel and filmed entirely on location in the U.K., this is the first movie version of the story in 65 years.
The classic tale of love and misunderstanding unfolds in class-conscious England near the close of the 18th century. The five Bennet sisters – Elizabeth, or Lizzie, Jane, Lydia, Mary , and Kitty – have been raised well aware of their mother's fixation on finding them husbands and securing set futures. The spirited and intelligent Elizabeth, however, strives to live her life with a broader perspective, as encouraged by her doting father.
When wealthy bachelor Mr. Bingley takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man's sophisticated circle of London friends and the influx of young militia officers, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. Eldest daughter Jane, serene and beautiful, seems poised to win Mr. Bingley's heart. For her part, Lizzie meets with the handsome and - it would seem - snobbish Mr. Darcy, and the battle of the sexes is joined.
Starring Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Rosamund Pike, Jena Malone, Talulah Riley, Carey Mulligan, Brenda Blethyn, Donald Sutherland, Simon Woods, Tom Hollander.
