The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Under Graduate is an entrance examination in India for students who wish to study undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses like MBBS, MD, MS, BDS and MDS in government or private medical colleges in India. NEET-UG replaced the AIPMT and all individual MBBS exams conducted by states themselves in 2013. NEET-UG is an individual entrance test for admissions to more than 66,000 MBBS and BDS seats over India. Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an engineering entrance examination conducted for admission to different engineering colleges in India. In 2012, the government-run CBSE that earlier conducted the AIEEE declared the JEE that replaced the AIEEE and IIT-JEE. There are different institutes like the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, and the Indian Institute of Science which use the marks obtained in JEE Advanced as the basis for admission. These are not participating institutes of central IIT JEE Advanced counselling of which all IITs are members. Any student who takes admission to IITs cannot appear for the JEE-Advanced examination in the next year, but the same is not the case with IISER, RGIPT, IISc and other institutes as these institutes only use JEE Advanced mark for admission.
In 2013, the IIT Council confirmed the decision of the Joint Admission Board to continue with the two-phase JEE pattern (Main and Advanced) for IITs in 2014. Joint Seat Allocation Authority conducted the joint admission process for a total of 23 IITs, ISM, 32 NITs, 18 IIITs and 19 other Government Funded Technical Institutes.
