Aiming for excellent oral health is the best new year’s resolution you can make. Caring for your teeth and gums prevents bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease, which makes it even more essential. Go into the new year with excellent oral hygiene, by following our guide on oral health tips for 2019:
Everyone knows that brushing your teeth twice daily is essential for good oral health. However, many of us still skip our night time brushing and leave it until the morning. Each time you skip brushing your teeth, you are allowing bacteria to build up which could have been simply avoided with two minutes of brushing.
Before bed is considered the most important time to brush your teeth. This is because while you are sleeping your saliva production decreases. Being the mouth’s defence against bacteria, brushing before bed is crucial for cleaning away bacteria so it doesn’t harbour overnight.
Once you have brushed your teeth, spit out your toothpaste. However, to avoid washing the concentrated fluoride right out of your mouth from the remaining toothpaste, do not rinse straight away. This can dilute it, thereby making it less effective. This applies to both water and mouthwash – even if that too contains fluoride.
Instead, rinse with mouthwash at a separate time of the day. For example, after lunch as it is also recommended to avoid eating and drinking for 30 minutes after rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash.
Make the most of your two minutes by understanding how to brush the right way. Begin by positioning your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle, moving towards your gumline. Then, while brushing, move your toothbrush gently back and forth with circular movements over the front, back and top of your teeth. Not forgetting to brush and floss behind your lower front teeth.
For additional care, brushing your tongue can clean away potential cavity causing bacteria and freshen your breath. Antiseptic mouth rinses are also helpful for reducing plaque build up and lowering your risk of gum disease.
When selecting a toothbrush there are a few things to consider. Firstly, find a medium bristled toothbrush, as hard bristles can irritate your gums. Bristles also need to be small enough to clean hard to reach places, to clear out food remains. Also, although a manual toothbrush cleans just as well, if an electric toothbrush is more motivating for you, choose electric.
Visiting your dentist for a routine check up is essential for monitoring your oral health. With regular appointments, early signs of gum disease and other issues can be treated before they get worse. You will also receive professional advice on how to further care for your teeth and gums, to maintain excellent oral health.
