Top 4 Transportation Methods to Getting Around Colombo – Explore Colombo at your Convenience

Colombo may seem like a tiny little city but for its size it sure has a lot of attractions. If you are keen on seeing the sights but are wondering how to get around the city, below are 4 common options

1

By Car

The most comfortable mode of getting around Colombo is by car. You can either hire a chauffeured vehicle through applications such as Uber or Pickme or opt to rent a car at one of the car rental places around the city. If driving is what you prefer you will need a valid driver's license and you will also have to figure out how to get around this city. Although Google Maps has proved to be plenty useful in this regard, it may seem a bit challenging to figure out commonly practiced road rules in Colombo, especially if you are not used to driving in Sri Lanka. The better and more convenient option is sticking to a chauffeured vehicle. It may work out to be more expensive but it is the more convenient option.

2

By Bus

Public transport in Sri Lanka is very affordable. So if budget is an issue, you will find the bus service in Sri Lanka the most cost effective way to get around Colombo. The only downside to hopping the bus is figuring out the bus numbers which corresponds to the desired routes which- truth be told, takes a while to master.

3

By Tuk Tuk

Tuk Tuks are considered the best way to beat the traffic in Colombo for they can squeeze their way through narrow gaps and take you where you want to go at record time. That said, a ride on a Tuk Tuk is one experience that every visitor to Sri Lanka must experience. Tuk Tuks are 3 wheeled vehicles that are readily available and easy to hire. You can either hail one from the road or use Apps such as PickMe which enables booking a Tuk Tuk from anywhere in the island. Tuk Tuk's are cheaper than cars but some consider it still relatively expensive. The biggest downside to Tuk Tuks is the limited space. For this reason this mode of transportation only works with small crowds.

4

On Foot

Colombo is a small and very busy city so it can get pretty crowded here. Parking more often than not is an issue on main roads and if you are driving yourself around the city, this is one problem you are likely to encounter. One very convenient way to get around Colombo is on foot. Of course when it comes to long distances you cannot cover the entire distance this way but you can nevertheless opt to walk to and from attractions when distances are short. For this reason when it comes to choosing out of the hotels in Colombo, it is best to be centrally located. Places like Residence by Uga Escapes are among the options available in the heart of the city.
