Top 5 Things to do in Mirissa – Another Favourite Destination from Southern Sri Lanka

Apart from the breathtaking beaches that Mirissa boasts of, this little town in the south of Sri Lanka is better known for whale and dolphin watching excursions. Below are a few things to do here

1

Go Whale Watching

Whale watching in a nut shell is what put Mirissa on the map. Thousands of people come into Mirissa from both in and out of Sri Lanka to enjoy a little bit of whale watching off the coast of Mirissa. There are a number of operators who offer whale watching boat trips and with a little research on the internet you will be able to find something you are looking for. On your whale watching expedition expect to see lots of dolphins putting up a show for you. Common varieties you are likely to encounter include Spinner, Striped, Bottlenose and Spotted Dolphins.

2

Bask in the Beaches

Thanks to being located in the south of Sri Lanka, the beaches of Mirissa need no introduction. Boasting golden sands and sparkling waters these beaches are perfect for both swimming and snorkelling. If you are not up for the adventure, you can simply wash your feet in the waves and relax by the golden shores. Hotels in Mirissa are also found in abundance by the beach. Places like Shri Sharavi Beach Villas & Spa are among the options available for those visiting the city. So whether it is adventure you are looking for or some relaxation and connection with nature, the beaches of Mirissa are perfect

3

Go Sightseeing around the neighbouring towns

Since Mirissa is not such a large city, there is more to see in the neighbouring cities than in Mirissa itself. Weligama for instance is just a hop, skip and a jump from Mirissa and is an ideal place to witness traditional fisherman at work. Then there is Galle. This city is around 18 kilometres from Mirissa and is considered by many as one of the most popular cities in all of southern Sri Lanka. In a nutshell Galle is that one city that has it all; and its many museums and unique infrastructure is a testament to this fact. Walk along the Galle Fort during dusk and absorb the colonial ambience in the air. For more historic sightseeing you can also visit Matara which is slightly further down south.

4

Try sea food

A visit to Mirissa is not complete without trying the scrumptious seafood here. Giant prawns, crabs, lobsters and what not; you name it, they have it. Fresh from the ocean, seafood here is cooked in a variety of styles appealing to tastes that are both eastern as well as western.

5
