Negombo is known for its international airport and this is the first place you'll arrive at, on your journey to explore Sri Lanka. So why not stay here for a couple of days and explore the local attractions? You won't be disappointed. Here is a list of attractions you can enjoy in Negombo.

Main Fish Market

Negombo is a famous place for all things fish. Being a fishing town, you really have to check out their fish markets, and the main fish market is a must visit. Every day, you'll find fishermen take out their canoes called 'oruvas' and head to the sea early in the morning in search of their livelihood. After some time scanning the seas, they come back with plenty of fish to sell. Some of them, sell the fish right there on the beach. So head to the beach in the early hours of the morning, around 6 a.m, to witness the lifestyle of the Negombo fishermen. As Negombo is located close to a lagoon, fish isn't the only thing the place is famous for. It has its own collection of prawns, crabs and lobsters too!

Negombo Beach

The Negombo Beach is one of the main attractions here, as Negombo is a coastal town, what can you expect? The long stretch of beach ends in a heavenly landscape full of palm trees. Hotels are dotted along the coastal area. And there are many hotel offers in Sri Lanka you can opt for, for instance, properties the likes of Heritance Negombo have some offers you can check out. Head to the beach for a pleasant walk and a golden sunset which will be one of the highlights of your holiday.

Hamilton Canal

The Dutch were one of the early settlers of the country and you can still witness some of there clever interventions and interesting additions in certain areas in this country. Negombo is also such a place. The Hamilton canal is one of them which starts in Negombo and stretches all the way to Colombo and from there to Puttalam. A total of one hundred and twenty kilometres; an incredible feat it was! On top of that, in the Negombo area of the canal, there are pathways alongside it. You can hire a bicycle and ride it along these paths to explore the area. The area is dotted with wonderful views and tiny villages!

Dutch Fort

Another incredible Dutch addition is none other than the Dutch Fort in Negombo which is located close to the seaside that is near the mouth of the lagoon. Here, you'll find some ancient ruins of an old fort built by the Dutch. Inscribed on the gateway is the year '1678'. Visit the Esplanade which is a place where cricket matches are held. Also, you need to know that the grounds of the fort are now used as a prison which means you can't go snooping around unless you commit a crime and are sent there for a reason!

Tourists often visit the private beaches which are located in front of the hotel, which is usually quiet and relaxing. But for more energetic vibes and to experience the local lively beaches you need to come here!
