5 Exercises for Your Abs

Core workouts strengthen your abdominal muscles, which in turn support your back and spine. Personal trainers accredited by a Utah college can help you toughen up your core with these 5 killer core exercises.

1

The Plank

The Plank

This first exercise is simple, but tests how strong your core really is. Get down into the push-up position, keeping your back straight and your palms directly beneath your shoulders. Hold this position for at least 30 seconds, relying less on your arms and legs and more on your abs to hold you up.

2

The Superman

The Superman

This is another simple exercise, but it packs a punch. Lie down on your stomach with your arms extended out over your head. Then, simultaneously lift your left arm and your right leg. Hold for 2-3 seconds, lower and repeat with your right arm and your left leg. Each side is ½ a rep. Personal trainers from a Utah college recommend doing 10-12 reps.

3

The Squat and Twist

The Squat and Twist

Stand with your feet apart, about a shoulder’s width, with your arms extended out in front of you, hands clasped. Bend your knees to 90° into a squat, twisting your upper body to the left at the same time. Come up, straightening your upper body, and repeat to the right.

4

The Hip Lift

The Hip Lift

Start by lying on the floor on your back. Now stick your legs up in the air, straightening your knees if you can. Your arms should be down by your sides with your palms facing up. Here’s the tough part: lift your hips, trying not to let your legs rock back and forth. Bring your hips back to the floor and repeat as many times as you can. Take your time.

5

The Push-Up

The Push-Up

You know how to do these. But if push-ups are too hard to do with your legs straight, try kneeling. If you’re a beginner, try doing them standing up facing a wall. Stand at an angle and lean against the wall with your arms straight. Then lean your body forward, bending your arms. Push out. To make sure you’re doing these exercises correctly, consider hiring a personal trainer with a credible degree from a Utah college.
