Top experiences in North & South Male Atolls – Discovering the best of Maldives

Maldives is an archipelago made up of 1190 coral islands spread across the equator in clusters of 26 natural atolls. Home to a plethora of marine life, these atolls offer so much to do and discover

1

Addu Atoll

Among the many atolls in the Maldives, the Addu atoll is one of the most popular. In addition to the myriad of species that call this atoll their home, there is also a little bit of history and culture in this part of the island. For a long time this atoll was the primary base for British military operations. As a result in Addu, locals are well versed in the English language and use this ability a great deal to promote tourism. Foreigners are drawn to the Addu atoll for this and many other reasons. It is also a great base atoll to get around from for the causeways you find here connects to a number of important islands and enables easy access to neighbouring regions.

Lankanfinolhu Faru

Submerged somewhere in the North Male Atoll is the Lankanfinolhu Faru which is a popular dive site that has been fondly referred to as the Manta Point among divers. As the name has it, this region has a rich collection of manta rays which is frequently witnessed during the southwest monsoon season. This is the time when they can be spotted cleaning and feeding. The Manta Point has a top reef at about 12 meters which slopes to a depth of 40 meters. The manta rays however can easily be spotted at a 15 meter depth itself. In addition to the manta rays, this dive spot is also known for its collection of its other exotic fish species.

Laamu Atoll

The Laamu Atoll like most other atolls in Maldives is home to a treasure trove of amazing wonders that has a marked effect on all 5 of your senses. It is a nature lover's haven and a water lover's paradise and once you get here you will be carried away in the sea of wonders. Although the Laamu Atoll does have its share of marine wonders the highlight of this atoll is Isdhoo. Isdhoo is one of the few inhabited islands that is home to some of the oldest ruins from Maldives' age old Buddhist era. In fact the nation's largest stupa is located in this island making it a highly significant spot among Buddhists. In addition to this, the island also houses a number of important lomafanu; the ancient royal edicts that have been inscribed on copper plates. The lomafanu contributed a great deal in understanding the history of Maldives. Large Buddhist monasteries occupied the islands of Isdhoo and Dambidu both of which are found in the Laamu Atoll.

Seenu

This is a famous South Male Atoll that is again very popular among swimmers and divers. The collection of marine species is exquisite and is great for underwater activities. Even if you are staying at Baros Maldives or any other eco resort in Maldives at the North Male atoll pay a visit to Seenu. It is worth it.
