Best Exhibits You Must See at National Gallery of Victoria - Art lover's paradise!

The National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, is one of the most prominent art galleries in the country and demands a visit by art enthusiasts. The gallery displays art from around the globe and the exhibitions held there are some of the world renowned ones that attract the attention of many. Here is a list of the best exhibits at the National Gallery of Victoria.

1

Great Hall

The Great hall is an iconic place of the gallery. The highlight of the place is none other than the magnificent glass ceiling which was designed by Leonard French of France. The ceiling is tastefully created by two hundred and twenty-four triangles of glass where each triangle weigh about three hundred kilograms. The walls are decorated with masterful abstract art pieces making it well worth your visit. You can try serviced apartments in Melbourne, in the likes of the Oaks On William, for accommodation as it is located in close proximity to the National Gallery of Victoria.

2

Agnolo Gaddi: Madonna and Child (1388-1390)

This painting was completed in the 14th century and is a very early work of Agnollo Gaddi, a talented Italian painter who was an ardent follower of the famous Giotto. The painting captures the face of the Virgin Mary where she thoughtfully looks into the future of the Christ child. Her expression is painted beautifully where you can see that she seems to know the future of her child.

3

Dosso DOSSI: Lucrezia Borgia, Duchess of Ferrara (c. 1519-1530)

Another popular painting of the gallery is the Dosso DOSSI which was acquired by the Felton Bequest a few decades ago, in the year of 1966. During the time of acquisition, people did not know the person in the painting and it was generally assumed that the person was a youth due to the instrument he was holding in the painting. Later on, in the years, the painting was thought to be depicting a woman due to the mound on her chest. And the hairstyle too pointed towards the person being a woman. The art curator, after skilfully examining the painting, declared that the artist was none other than Dosso Dossi.

Two old men disputing: Rembrandt (1628)

The two old men disputing painting is another famous artwork by Rembrandt who painted this one at the age of 25 years. This painting captures a moment of two ageing men beautifully. The men seem to have been on a deep conversation about life all night. These moments are seen in the breaking of dawn and the morning light seeping through the window and the candle that has been extinguished since. The imagery, however, is quite startling, with the men having grey hair, and crumpled toes and fingers. The theme of the painting is of Vanitas origin, a Dutch theme that takes from the "We come, we live, we die".

Meindert HOBBEMA: The old oak (1662)

This oil painting on canvas was also bought by the Felton Bequest in 1950. The painting seizes a moment of an oak tree standing tall although the atmosphere surrounding it is quite cold. The painting is truly exquisite.
