Roti

This is a type of Indian flatbread which is now popular all over the world, including Mauritius. A serving usually consists of five of these delicious treats, and you will find them prepared in different ways, using a different combination of fillings. Gateau Piment

This is more of a snack than a meal, though many do enjoy these frittata like bites for breakfast. Made up primarily of yellow split peas which are combined with other ingredients, they are deep fried till they reach their golden colour, and served either as a standalone, or occasionally in a baguette. These delicious treats are soft and tender on the inside, while being crisp on the outside. The name translates to chili fritters, but you don't have to worry, they are spicy but not too hot. This is a snack you shouldn't miss when in the country.

Mauritian Biriyani

You will find biriyani on the menu in several places in the eastern part of the world, and wherever it is served, it is a local favourite. How it prepares and tastes however varies between countries, and you will find that this dish in Mauritius more often resembles the Indian variant that that which you find in Persian countries. Rice cooked with aromatic spices and yogurt is served with fantastic meats prepared so well it just falls off the bone. It is definitely a meal to opt for if you are looking to eat to your hearts content.
