5 must Try Traditional Dishes in Oman - The things you shouldn't miss out on!

Oman has so much to offer her visitors. True to this, Oman also has a splendid array of food you can taste and enjoy. Trying out the local cuisine in Oman is a must, and wouldn't be complete if you don't try these five items of the lot.

1

Majboos

Majboos, also popularly known as the Kabsa around the Middle East, is a flavoursome local's favourite type of mixed rice dish which has its root, not so far from Oman, in Saudi Arabia. The dish is typically made with basmati rice mixed in chicken or meat, vegetables and an array of spices to a spike of the flavour. Side dishes of green salad or yoghurt, tomato sauce and bread also may be served. Although you can find ready-made Kabsa mix packets in supermarkets, this isn't anything to the dish made from scratch!

If you're looking for serviced apartments in Muscat Oman, for accommodation, then check out the Somerset Panorama Muscat, for instance, the place provides a comfortable stay.

2

Shuwa

Another popular dish in Oman is the Shuwa which translates to 'grilled meat' in the local language, Arabic. The dish is made during festive occasions like the Eid festivals, but that doesn't mean you can't try a good plate of Shuwa in any other time of the year when in the country. The Shuwa isn't easily cooked, it requires a tremendous amount of time and effort. Typically, the meat is prepared on Eid and is only consumed on the second or third day of Eid. The meat is first prepped by marinating in some of the traditional Omani spices and is then packed into banana leaves. Or sometimes palm leaves. This wrapped meat is then placed on a sand oven underground in which it pretty much gets cooked. Strange is it? But don't you worry, this is one of the most delicious dishes you can have in Oman.

3

Bread

Who doesn't love a crispy bite of bread? And in Oman, you have several types. You get them in all sizes and shapes and are typically served with main meals. Don't be taken aback if you see some bread served with the meal you ordered in a restaurant. Rest be assured it is indeed yours. Bread is pretty much always served with main dishes.

4

Dates

And like the bread, the dates come in all sizes, colours and softness. You can have some mouth wavering sweet succulent dates, or dry ones which are a bit hard to chew and the moderate ones, which contains both elements. With the types of dates grown in Oman, you can pretty much go on and on. Besides, if you don't taste dates when in the Middle East, how can you deem your trip complete?

5

Kahwa

Coffee will follow you around anywhere you go, especially in the Middle East. Kahwa is basically coffee in Arabic and Omani Kahwa has its perks. With cardamom added in its preparation, it is pretty much one of the best flavoursome coffees you can have. Besides, to add a touch of sweetness, Kahwa is typically served with dates or halwa.
