Famous sporting venues in Hong Kong- For the sport enthusiasts

Hong Kong is home to many stadiums and sporting venues that hosts several championship games. Here are some of the famous venues.

The Hong Kong Stadium

This is a 40,000 seated stadium that is situated in the heart of Causeway Bay, less than half an hour ride away from_ Dorsett Wanchai Hong Kong_. It was built in 1994 and is home to the largest sporting events like the annual Hong Kong Sevens Rugby Tournament. Apart from some visiting exhibition matches, the international football matches are also hosted here.
The best seats are located in the lower-tiers in the open air but covered stadium. There is dedicated wheelchair accessible seating available as well. The stadium has an in-house restaurant and many executive lounges.

Kai Tak Stadium

This is being built at the site of the Kai Tak Airport. It boasts a multipurpose stadium with a seating capacity of more than forty thousand with a retractable roof which will make the venue ideal for both sporting and entertainment events. There are two other smaller stadiums; an outdoor one with a capacity of 5000 and an indoor one with 4000 seats. The stadium is still under construction and is expected to be completed by 2019.

Queen Elizabeth Stadium

Located amidst many a Wan Chai Hotel in the city, this is an indoor sports facility. It was built in 1977 and the stadium was opened to the public in 1980 August. It has consistently been the venue for many sporting and cultural activities. It has a gymnasium, a badminton and squash court and a multi-purpose hall that can accommodate three thousand spectators. It is named the Queen Elizabeth Stadium as it was built during the time Hong Kong was part of the British colony.

Sha Tin Racecourse

Located in the New Territories, this is one of the only two racecourses for horse racing in the country. It was built in 1978 on reclaimed land and is the largest racecourse. Initially, it was able to accommodate 35,000 but after renovations, it can accommodate 85,000 people. The racecourse also has 20 large stables that are enough for about 1200 horses. It is noteworthy to mention that the racecourse also has its own equine hospital, an equine swimming pool, a racing laboratory and even a riverside gallop. This venue hosts more than 400 races per season including the famous Sha Tin Sprint Trophy and Sha Tin Racecourse Silver Jubilee Cup.

Hong Kong Coliseum

Built-in 1983 by the Urban Council. This is another multi-purpose indoor arena that hosts many different sporting activities such as badminton, volleyball, basketball, ice-skating and futsal. Although it is a sporting arena, it is a popular venue for concerts as the floor is known to withstand a higher pressure that some of the industrial buildings cannot withstand. Apart from this, the Coliseum also has open and closed conference rooms that are used for conferences and conventions. One of the memorable concerts that were hosted here was by the popular pop band called Westlife.
