AWS provides default VPC for each AWS Region but default VPC is open and it is useful for learning and playing. But when we load real application, for that we need to create Custom VPC because we need to secure database servers or storage because those can't be open for public. It means we need to lock it down. But we can not achieve this public subnet. To achieve the security, we need to create public & private subnets. Lets say we create public and private subnets, but how we can access internet through private subnet or private instance. To access internet, there are 2 ways to access internet.
1. NAT gateways
2. NAT instance
