Embark your journey from Alice Springs, following the Larapinta Drive and then Namatjira Drive to reach Glen Helen Gorges. If you are driving, Glen Helen would probably be unknown to GPS, but since there is no diversion on road, you cannot really go wrong. A towering sandstone wall is the first thing you’ll see once you reach here. The ranges make way for Finke River and are home to the famous Finke River waterhole. The area's traditional owners believe that this inviting swimming spot is the home of an ancient and powerful Rainbow Serpent. Spend some time here, take a cool dip and lookout for some amazing local wildlife!

Ellery Creek Big Hole is recognised as an internationally significant geological site. High red cliffs, a large waterhole and a sandy creek fringed by gums make this one of the most popular and picturesque picnicking spots in the ranges. Explore the creek on a three-kilometre Dolomite walk to see the rocky formations around or shelter overnight in the picnic areas of Red River or Ghost Gums for a night amid the outback!

If you have a 4WD vehicle and a good GPS connection or a map, then Palm Valley is a must-explore site. Situated between Glen Helen and Kings Canyon, Palm Valley homes scenic gorges and relics of a bygone era of tropical forests. A little away from other sites, Palm Valley resides in the Finke Gorge National Park and noted for the diverse range of plant species that grow here. Palm Valley is also the only place in the world where you’ll find Red Cabbage Palms!

Adding to these are many other gorges that you cannot miss. Ochre Pits and Roma Gorge present wonderful Aboriginal sites with displays of spectacular rock art. Redbank is a stunning gorge and chasm, that is a refuge for many threatened plant and animal species.
If you’re a serious rambler, then covering the Larapinta Trail to see the whole of Macdonnell Ranges can be your greatest achievement! Extending over 223 kilometres, the trail passes through gaps and sheltered gorges, rugged ranges, and many spectacular landscape before rewarding you with 360° vistas from Mt Sonder – the highest point and end of the trail.
So don’t dwindle your Red Centre itinerary with just an Uluru day trip. Spend at least a day exploring the most beautiful parts of West MacDonnell ranges for an Outback adventure like never before!
