Sigiriya

Sigiriya is believed to have been built during the reign of King Kashyapa and hosts the ruins of an ancient palace complex. The fortress features many iconic facets including its famous paintings (frescoes). Sigiriya is one of the eight world heritage sites in the country and is renowned for its imaginative yet elaborate urban planning sites found in the first millennium. The design features the combined concepts of asymmetry and symmetry that intentionally interlocks the man-made forms in its surroundings.

Polonnaruwa

Within Sri Lanka's cultural triangle, you will find the city of Polonnaruwa, one of the nation's richest archaeological heritage sites. This reminds us of Sri Lanka's true heritage which dates back over two thousand five hundred years. Being a testimony to the greatness as well as the discipline of the Kingdom's first rulers, this ancient city is considered one of the best planned archaeological relic sites in all of Sri Lanka. So much so that it has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. It is believed to have been one of the country's most beautiful kingdoms based on all the parks, sacred places, shrines and massive buildings that it contained. If you're a fan of Duran Duran, you'd notice the city used a backdrop in the music video for "Save a Prayer" in 1982.

Batticaloa Lagoon

You will come across many little islands all within the Batticaloa Lagoon such as Buffalo island, Bone island and Puliayantheevu. Today you'll find many bridges that have been constructed across the lagoon, connecting all the islands. The largest bridge here is Lady Manning Bridge which is located in Kallady. If you've heard of the famous "singing fish", it is from none other than Kallady lagoon. You'll hear a musical vibration from the waters during the months of April and September. To best hear this beautiful sound, you must take a boat where you can experience it by placing your ear on an oar or by even dipping a stick into the water.

Passikudah Bay

Comprised of a shallow fringing coral reef, all towards the outer bay with beautiful scattered coral communities within, Pasikudah Bay is a haven for all nature lovers. It is one of the most iconic and popular reef systems in the East. It has even been proposed as a Marine Sanctuary by NARA. If you're in Pasikuda, beach hotels are an amazing place to stay in. You'll find many around the area, such as Amethyst Passikudah for example.

Trincomalee

Whale and dolphin watching is quickly picking up steam to be one of the most sought-after activities in the entire country. Whale watching itself has been firmly established during the East Coast season. Trincomalee, from March to August becomes a hotbed for Sperm Whales, Blue Whales and is excellent for spotting Spinner Dolphins as well.
