06 Paradise Beaches in Sri Lanka – Shores of Pure Perfection

Sri Lanka is an island, and one especially loved for its gorgeous beaches. In fact, the island has no shortage of paradise beaches, where a swift drive down a city road leading to the coast will reward you with a sandy stretch of shore. But, if you want to choose, listed below are some of the best.

1

Wijeya Beach in Unawatuna

Unawatuna is located on the southern coast, probably the most famous coastal strip on the island. There you will find Wijeya Beach, a sun worshipers dream come true. Look forward to a clean white sand beach, shaded by swaying coconut palms under which you can chill, a king coconut drink in hand. Of course, you may not be able to stay out of the warm Indian Ocean framed by a natural coral reef, where spotting the head of a curious turtle popping over the waves is quite a treat.

2

Mirissa Beach

Surfing, swimming and sunbathing around popular Mirissa Beach is an iconic attraction. Another gem located along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, this stretch of beach shaded by the Weligama bay is perfect for any kind of surfing, whether you are an amateur or pro. The water is so shallow you can literally wade out a few metres into the sea, and wading out to Parrot Rock is one of the most popular activities there.

3

Bentota Beach

Wildly popular Bentota Beach hugs the south-west coast of the island. A place to party, sunbathe, swim and indulge in the latest water sports, Bentota Beach is always a fun place to be. The huge expanse of sand is quite inviting and if you are a guest at AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa, you could even consider a boat safari at the nearby Madu River. Enjoy a riot of activities on the beach throughout the day, and get back to your seaside Bentota resort where you can sit on the sandy beach and enjoy an amazing sunset at the end of the day.

4

Arugam Bay

A surfer's paradise, Arugam Bay is located on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. A world renowned surfing destination this beach attracts some of the best from across the globe, especially during high-season. The place is still rather wild and free, leaving most of the beaches untouched by too much modernisation and touristy resorts, hence, this place is ideal for surfers to enjoy in solitary bliss.

5

Koggala Beach

Easy to reach from your Bentota hotel, Koggala Beach is located close to the iconic city of Galle. Sitting on the southern coast, this beach is found between Unawatuna and Mirissa and is an expansive white sand beach, which is not too crowded; perfect for a day's visit from popular resorts in Bentota.

6

Tangalle Beach

A haven tucked away in the deep south, Tangalle Beach is nothing short of paradise. Wild and rustic the place is not located on the usual route, hence, this beach is not too touristy or crowded. There are some great spots along the beach waiting to be discovered and perfect for enjoying some quiet time with nothing but the sounds of breaking waves.
