Cayman Resident? – It’s Easy and Affordable to Get Married

Cayman Resident? – It’s Easy and Affordable to Get Married

Today I will officiate my 2240th wedding since starting my business 10 years ago. About a third of the weddings I do every year are weddings for residents. Up until recently, our local clients were mostly word of mouth, but now that we have moved our office to the George Town waterfront ( next to Burger King) with our own Wedding Room for small weddings, we have a much larger local clientele.

Residents, meaning anyone who has been living in the Cayman Islands for more than 15 days, with the intent of staying longer, ie Caymanians, individuals on work permits, and those who are permanent residents MUST be married by having their “Banns of Marriage” published. This just means having your details, including your proposed date of marriage, posted on the Notice Board outside our office for 7 days. This is to give anyone who wishes to object to your marriage the opportunity to do so. In reality, it is unusual for anyone to lodge an objection in writing as the law requires.

Personalizing Your Wedding Ceremony – Why it Matters.

Personalizing Your Wedding Ceremony – Why it Matters.

Wherever you chose to be married, many features of the wedding ceremony are the same. You have vows, rings, flowers and veils, just like brides down through recent years. I am sure many of you look carefully at your mother and your grandmother’s wedding and soak up all the details. The question is, what will make YOUR wedding different? How does your wedding ceremony reflect your personality, or your beloved’s personality.

Many times the difference between a memorable wedding ceremony and one which is the "same old same old" depends on your Wedding Celebrant. You plan every detail of the event with your wedding planner or your friends, but do you stop and think about the words you will actually be saying

Getting Married In Cayman? Do This First.

Getting Married In Cayman? Do This First.

Before you do anything else, you must secure the services of a licensed Marriage Officer.  There are more than 90 Marriage Officers in the Cayman Islands.  Most of these are Ministers of Religion.  There are three Civil Registrars of Marriage in the Cayman Islands.  Two of these are on Grand Cayman, Mrs Joy Basdeo, MBE JP, Notary Public and Mrs. Francine Jackson of Cayman Weddings.  Cayman Weddings no longer officiate cruise weddings, they are available for afternoon weddings only.

My clients often ask me whether they can go down to the marriage bureau and get their own Special Marriage License, to save money.  There is no advantage to this, as Simply Weddings does not charge for this service.  As part of your wedding package, all our overseas clients are sent a Registered Marriage Certificate from the Cayman Islands government at no extra charge.  This is your legal marriage certificate, and it will be mailed to you within 3 working days of  your wedding.

Cayman Islands Weddings Need Not Be Expensive. Here’s How!

Cayman Islands Weddings Need Not Be Expensive. Here’s How!

The biggest positive about a Destination Wedding in the Cayman Islands is how easy it is to plan and organize. Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands, and has the most services and the most Destination Wedding Planners. If you want to have a simple, destination wedding either while your cruise ship is in port, or while you are here as a stay-over visitor, then Simply Weddings can help you organize and plan either a legal wedding or a symbolic ceremony. Symbolic ceremonies can only be done after you have been legally married in another jurisdiction. For a legal wedding you will need to find a wedding officiant who will assist you in getting your Special Marriage License from the Cayman Islands Government. After the wedding, your officiant will file your wedding and make sure you get your Registered Marriage Certificate, the document which you will need when you get home to show that you were legally married in the Cayman Islands and your marriage has been recorded.

Planning A Destination Wedding? Choose The Cayman Islands

Planning A Destination Wedding? Choose The Cayman Islands

The biggest reason to choose the Cayman Islands for your Destination Wedding is that its easy. We have no residency requirement, so that if you're only going to be visiting by cruise ship for the day, you can still be married. Couples can also fly in for the weekend and be married.

As an independent business, Simply Weddings does not require 90 days notice for you to be married, as most of the cruise lines do. We only need enough time to make sure your paperwork is in order, and we can apply for the Special Marriage License on your behalf.

Get Your Cayman Wedding Records Fast

Get Your Cayman Wedding Records Fast

Every year hundreds of tourists get married in the Cayman Islands. What they might not realize is that they are going to need their Cayman Registered Marriage Certificate (RMC) when they return home.

The Registered Marriage Certificate is the proof that you were legally married in the Cayman Islands, and your marriage has been recorded. You will need it to present to Social Security as proof of your marital status, and if you are going to change your name. You will need it to present to DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) for the same reason. Lastly, you will need to send it off with your other documents to get your name changed on your passport.

How To Plan Cayman Islands Destination Wedding?

How To Plan Cayman Islands Destination Wedding?

Today I thought I would give brides and grooms a few pointers for getting married in the Cayman Islands.

  • Over 90% of brides research weddings on the internet. Start by typing in “wedding”, and “Grand Cayman”, or “Cayman Islands”. You will find lots of wedding planners, and hotels with wedding planning services.

  • If you typed “getting married in Grand Cayman/Cayman Islands” you will get a list of all the requirements, but there is no need for you to go down to the marriage bureau to get your Special Marriage License, as your wedding officiant or marriage officer will do that for you at no additional cost.

  • So your first step is to find a wedding planner, or a wedding officiant. Some full service companies like my company Simply Weddings, provide both.

  • A wedding planner or wedding consultant is an intelligent choice for a destination wedding, since he or she will know the best local wedding vendors and can make the best deals.
