Why the Cayman Islands are the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean?

Why the Cayman Islands are the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean?

While many of the islands in the Caribbean have sought to claim renown as the culinary capital of the region, the Cayman Islands have been recognized with this title for more than a decade, according to the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism.

Tourism officials note that the culinary offerings on island have earned international recognition in such publications as Forbes, Food & Wine, USA Today, Vogue magazine and the Robb Report, among others. In addition, Cayman’s culinary team brought home gold medals from the 2018 Caribbean National Culinary Competition in Miami.

The local cuisine is hailed for its variety of flavors, the freshest fish (the “sea-to-table” experience) and most flavourful produce (the farm-to-table experience), as well as a growing Slow Food movement. Restaurateurs take great pride in working with local fishermen and farmers to bring the very best ingredients to all customers. According to tourism officials, there are more than 200 restaurants across the three Cayman Islands. They offer diverse culinary experiences to please every palate.

One of the best restaurants in the Cayman Islands, The Wharf, proudly offers some of the best local food in Grand Cayman, the largest of the three islands. Situated along the popular Seven Mile Beach corridor, The Wharf has been known for fine dining for 30 years, as well as for its extensive list of premium wines in the Cayman Islands.

Head to a Famous Restaurant in Grand Cayman for the Best Bourbons in the Cayman Islands

The history of bourbon is distinctly American, but it is enjoyed the world over – and especially in the Cayman Islands!

A brief history
While many sources contend that bourbon whiskey was named after Bourbon County, Kentucky, an expert on the subject, Michael Veach of Louisville, Kentucky, says otherwise. Veach is a former archivist for United Distilleries in Kentucky Bourbon Country and has spent decades studying bourbon history

Cheers to the Health Benefits of Red Wine – Especially in the Cayman Islands!

Red wine is popular worldwide in its many varieties and tastes. It is also generally acknowledged to have certain health benefits, so cheers to that! In moderation, as with all things, red wine can be good for you.

Digging into the research, we find that the ancient Romans, who popularized red wine, knew the benefits of it. According to information from the Mayo Clinic in the United States, various studies have shown that moderate amounts of all types of alcohol benefit your heart.

So, for health benefits, and just because you love red wine, enjoy a glass or share a bottle with family and friends at The Wharf. Here you will find the best red wines in the Cayman Islands in our extensive collection of nearly 500 wines by the bottle.

Where to Go for the Best Caviar and Champagne in the Cayman Islands

Where to Go for the Best Caviar and Champagne in the Cayman Islands

Caviar, one of the world’s oldest delicacies, is often described as the ultimate symbol of opulence.

“The first known record of caviar dates back to the Greek scholar Aristotle. In the 4th century BC, he described this delicacy as the eggs of the sturgeon, heralded into banquets amongst trumpets and flowers,” according to an article by Miruna Mirică-Damian in “The Art of Living” online magazine.

“The British kings of the Middle Ages used to reserve all the sturgeon for their own consumption, set-aside solely for royalty. However, it was the Persians who first prepared and savoured sturgeon roe, as they attributed many medicinal powers to it.”

Caviar became world-renowned in the late 18th century thanks to a Greek sailor and trader who introduced it to Europe from Russia, according to sturgeon farming company Sterling Caviar.

Now this fabulous delicacy can be found at The Wharf, one of the best restaurants in Seven Mile Beach in the Cayman Islands. The cuisine that features caviar includes blinis and poached or hard boiled eggs, as well as salmon. Often, caviar is served on toast or on scallops, and in general, any type of fatty food can be added. Toppings may include chives, scallions, capers and crème fraiche. The trick is to keep the flavors very clean, according to the chefs at The Wharf, who are recognized for creating fine dining in the Cayman Islands.

Celebrate Your Anniversary with a Romantic Candlelight Dinner at a Waterfront Restaurant

Celebrate Your Anniversary with a Romantic Candlelight Dinner at a Waterfront Restaurant

As your anniversary approaches and you begin thinking about how to celebrate with your loved one – whether you have been married one year or 50+ years – there are so many ways to say “I love you” on this special occasion.

One of the most popular ways to celebrate anniversaries is in a romantic setting. Why not rekindle the romance from the time when you first started dating and bring back the lovely memories from those days. The atmosphere and surroundings in which you choose to celebrate can enhance your mood, so think about a candlelight dinner at a waterfront restaurant, for example. And when you are thinking about this romantic dinner, let your thoughts turn to a fine restaurant in the Cayman Islands.

You and your spouse will feel the love when you are dining on the best food in the Cayman Islands at a table set up for you under a canopy on the white sand beach along famed Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman. Watch the most stunning sunset over the Caribbean Sea while you listen to the smooth, small waves lapping at the shore. Slowly you will be mesmerised by the beautiful skyscape as darkness falls and you see a panorama of thousands of stars.

All About Tapas: Small Plates, Spanish Style, to Enjoy in the Cayman Islands

All About Tapas: Small Plates, Spanish Style, to Enjoy in the Cayman Islands

I think by now tapas has become part of menu offerings in restaurants worldwide, but for those who haven’t taken notice, or perhaps don’t think tapas is their cup of tea, so to speak, let me shed some light on what tapas are.

It’s not so difficult to understand this culinary phenomenon if I explain it as analogous to appetizers. These small plates, which originated in Spain, are typically bar snacks served along with wine or beer. I say “typically” because in Spain, tapas are more than just small plates. True to their Mediterranean origins, “real” tapas include olive oil, garlic, seafood, onion, fish and seafood, a variety of pork products and an array of cheeses.

All in the name of tapas

As for the name tapas (plural), this apparently derives from the practice of covering a glass of wine with a small plate, or maybe a slice of bread, to keep out flies. (The definition of tapa is “cover” or “lid.”) Other lore has it that King Alfonso X, aka the Wise King of Spain, who, after falling ill to the extent that he could only consume small amounts of food and wine, ordered that taverns must serve small amounts of food with wine.

Tapas menus in the Cayman Islands

With those details under the belt, it’s time to move on and let readers know that tapas menus at restaurants on Seven Mile Beach offer some of the best food in the Cayman Islands.

Among my favourite tapas offerings at restaurants in Grand Cayman are coconut shrimp, conch fritters, Caribbean lobster bites, goat cheese tarts, yellow fin tuna carpaccio and the classic shrimp cocktail.
