Caviar, one of the world’s oldest delicacies, is often described as the ultimate symbol of opulence.
“The first known record of caviar dates back to the Greek scholar Aristotle. In the 4th century BC, he described this delicacy as the eggs of the sturgeon, heralded into banquets amongst trumpets and flowers,” according to an article by Miruna Mirică-Damian in “The Art of Living” online magazine.
“The British kings of the Middle Ages used to reserve all the sturgeon for their own consumption, set-aside solely for royalty. However, it was the Persians who first prepared and savoured sturgeon roe, as they attributed many medicinal powers to it.”
Caviar became world-renowned in the late 18th century thanks to a Greek sailor and trader who introduced it to Europe from Russia, according to sturgeon farming company Sterling Caviar.

I think by now tapas has become part of menu offerings in restaurants worldwide, but for those who haven’t taken notice, or perhaps don’t think tapas is their cup of tea, so to speak, let me shed some light on what tapas are.
It’s not so difficult to understand this culinary phenomenon if I explain it as analogous to appetizers. These small plates, which originated in Spain, are typically bar snacks served along with wine or beer. I say “typically” because in Spain, tapas are more than just small plates. True to their Mediterranean origins, “real” tapas include olive oil, garlic, seafood, onion, fish and seafood, a variety of pork products and an array of cheeses.
All in the name of tapas
As for the name tapas (plural), this apparently derives from the practice of covering a glass of wine with a small plate, or maybe a slice of bread, to keep out flies. (The definition of tapa is “cover” or “lid.”) Other lore has it that King Alfonso X, aka the Wise King of Spain, who, after falling ill to the extent that he could only consume small amounts of food and wine, ordered that taverns must serve small amounts of food with wine.

Once a month, an unusual gathering takes place at The Wharf that has become a mainstay of the Grand Cayman night scene. As 9 pm descends on this bastion of fine dining in the Cayman Islands, a motley crowd gathers, some dressed in a veritable time travel laundry basket of crushed velvet, bellbottoms, platform shoes, frilly shirts, satin jackets, glitter, and sculpted hair.
What’s going on? It’s the last Friday of the month, that’s what is going on. It is the Boogie Nights.
For long-term residents and regular visitors, the last Friday of the month demands a pilgrimage to The Wharf for a celebration of dance and pop music from the 70s and 80s – that glorious era that began when the hippie Summer of Love ended and popular music discovered glam. It’s the era that boogied through the 80s until the grunge of the 90s took over.
The Wharf not only offers the best dinner in Grand Cayman, but it also offers a way to shed the pounds afterward!
The Wharf’s long-time manager, Reno Mancini, launched Boogie Night’s Old School Disco Dance Party in 2005 to “give the locals and expats a night to reminisce and get a little bell-bottom crazy,” according to Cayman Compass. “Disco night as a theme night then grew from there. More and more people started coming out and embracing their inner Travolta; dressing up in leisure suits and 70s dresses that it began to have a life of its own. Tapas are served all day, every day, in bars and cafés throughout Spain. While everyone agrees that the tapa is a Spanish invention, there is little consensus about how this ‘small plate’ phenomenon became so popular when dining in the Cayman Islands and what exactly makes a tapa.
In Spain, tapas keep the locals fueled up as they flit from bar to bar before their midday or evening meal. Thanks to this eminently sensible approach to socializing, the tapa phenomenon has spread far and wide beyond the Spanish-speaking world. Over the last few decades, tapas have become a familiar item in restaurants in Seven Mile Beach and the best can be considered to be some of the best food in the Cayman Islands.
The primary meaning of tapa is cover or lid and these days in Spain and elsewhere it has become synonymous with this style of food. The origins of the meaning are uncertain, but there is no shortage of theories:
A common explanation is that an item, usually a slice of bread, would be placed on top of a drink to protect it from the fruit flies attracted by the ubiquitous sweet sherry served in Spain at the time. At some point, it became a habit to top this "cover" with a snack.
