Attractions in Kalutara – Coastal Splendours to Adore

Kalutara is a peaceful little town located on the south coast of Sri Lanka; the place offers a kind of an impromptu gateway to the south coast and is where the Kalu River meets the Indian Ocean. Apart from its fabulous coastal allures, Kalutara offers cultural attractions too; do read on.

1

Visit Calido Beach

As mentioned above, Kalutara is where the River Kalu meets the ocean, and Calido Beach is a small strip of sand located between the bay and sea. A little patch of heaven, the golden sand here is thick and soft, lapped at by gentle waves which create foamy little puddles all around. The shallow sea is perfect for bathing and is surrounded by a lush environment. Easy to reach from a beachside Kalutara hotel, Calido Beach should be on your list of must-visit sites in the area.

2

Enjoy the Holistic Environs of Kalutara Temple

The huge Kalutara Temple marks the entrance to the town; located across the Kalutara Bridge the shrine occupies both sides of the main road. Home to the world's largest hollow stupa, this temple is a huge pilgrimage site more so, for the Bo Tree growing along the banks of the river. The tree is believed to be one of the saplings brought down from India, originating from the very tree the Buddha attained Nirvana under. You will discover a fine collection of vintage art displayed within the stupa, while roadside tills are filled up by passing travellers, who pray for blessings and a safe journey. Located just 4kms from Mermaid Hotel & Club, the temple is a charming place to visit at night, especially on a full moon poya day.

3

Pay Homage at Lenawara Raja Maha Viharaya

One of the area's most iconic temples, the Lenawara Raja Maha Viharaya is located closer to the town of Bandaragama. Dating back to the 11th century Kingdom of Polonnaruwa, this temple sits at the summit of a hill, from where one can enjoy expansive views of the area. The complex is spread across the hill, with several shrines making up the area; hence, it is a nice hike around the compound exploring the place; ideal for working up an appetite before returning to your resort in Kalutara for a delicious Sri Lankan buffet.

4

Enjoy Nature at Nachchimale Stream

Located not too far from your Kalutara beach hotel, this bubbling stream is perfect for a cooling bath and lazy day spent in the confines of nature. Ask your hotel tour desk for directions to get there and you can plan to enjoy a laidback picnic, and scout out the place, cocooned within lush foliage.

Explore Richmond Castle

A vintage Edwardian mansion, Richmond Castel was built by philanthropist, Mudliyar Don Arthur De Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. Built between the period of 1900 and 1910, the mansion's construction was spared no expense, with timber being imported and a grand ballroom being part of the complex. Today the mansion and grounds are open to visitors who may explore the place, and spend a leisurely morning admiring the period furniture and elegant architecture.
