5 Places to Visit in Middlemount – something to look forward to your trip

Middlemount is a mining town in the Isaac Region of Central Queensland, Australia. Though not a prime tourist attraction, the town has many interesting features worth having a look.

1

Middlemount Airport

Middlemount Airport

For a first-time visitor in Middlemount, the airport itself is a must-see attraction. It's a small but beautifully constructed airport matching the rural environment. Even though there are no scheduled services you can easily get a charter flight to the Middlemount airport. Taxi services and car rentals are also available from there to the town.

Blue Mountain Park

Blue Mountain Park

The best of the nature parks available in Middlemount is the Blue Mountain Park, referred by locals as the 'Jewel in the crown' for its picturesque landscape and the surrounding views. This is a good place to spend a day out with your family as it has enough space for having a picnic and running around for the kids. The Blue Mountain Park provides free barbeque areas as well, which allow you to have a small outdoor party of your own. The main attraction about this park is the spectacular birdlife associated with it. It's a favourite spot for many Australian birds like the blue mountain parrots, kookaburras, rainbow lorikeets, and galahs. You can also see the wallabies feeding in the park during the evening hours.

3

Bundoora Dam

The eye-catching Bundoora Dam is a man-made attraction located 28 kilometres to the southwest of Middlemount, on the Connection Road linking Middlemount and Dysart with Tieri & Capella. The majestic weir contains around 10,000 megalitres of water and is ideal for fishing, swimming, and even water-skiing. The dam houses many types of fish including Golden Perch, Saratoga, Redclaw Crayfish, Sleepy Cod, and Eel-Tiled Catfish. The sandy shorelines of the dam are ideal for having a picnic or a barbeque. It also serves as a popular camping site for both the locals and visitors. The entry to the campsite is free and can be reached by normal car very easily. Boating is also permitted with some speed restrictions.

Middlemount mining sites

Middlemount's mining history runs back to the 1980's when it was established as a purpose-built coal-mining town. The major mining sites in the town are Angelo Coal's German Creek coal mine with five underground mines including the Grasstree and Bundoora underground mines. It also houses the Foxleigh and Lake Lindsey open cut mines.

Local attractions in the city

Tourism-wise, the city is not very developed but there are some decent hotels and restaurants in the city. If you are looking for Middlemount service apartments, you can find accommodation at Oaks Middlemount and a few other similar places that provide essential facilities at affordable rates. While you are staying in town, you can enjoy some boutique shopping at the Middlemount shopping precinct. Golf is quite popular in the city and two major golf events are hosted there annually. The Middlemount Rotunda Rest Area on the Fitzroy dev. road and Middlemount road intersection also makes a good picnic site.
