Why You Should Use a Broker When Buying a Yacht

So, you’ve decided you want to buy a yacht. Luxury yacht vacations are in your future. The decision is made but now comes the work. Do you need to find a broker? Our recommendation? Absolutely, yes. We believe that purchasing a yacht can be as complicated, if not more, than buying a home. When purchasing a home, you rely on a variety of professionals to make the deal happen – bankers, realtors, inspectors, etc. Purchasing a yacht is no different and here's why.

1

They know the laws.

It is a broker’s job to know the laws. Do you have to pay sales tax? Do you need to document the vessel with the U.S. Coast Guard? Is the sale even legal? A broker can answer these questions and more. He or she can also ensure you have the paperwork you need to prove your purchase for taxes and insurance considerations.

2

They will lead your search.

Another way that purchasing a yacht is similar to purchasing a home? The price. You want to be sure you are getting exactly what you want with your boat purchase. Sometimes you may not know exactly what they need. What does your family expect from the luxury yacht vacations in your future? A broker is an expert and can help you determine the yachting needs of you and your family in addition to locating the boat of your dreams.

3

They can help you negotiate.

Knowing what price to pay for the vessel of your dreams can be tricky. Prices will fluctuate with the season and location. Your broker will also make the offer for you and ensure all the necessary paperwork is included to prevent unnecessary delays. It is especially helpful for first-time yacht purchasers to have a third party involved in a negotiation, as this is no-doubt a stressful part of the purchasing process.

4

They have connections you don’t.

Brokers run with other brokers, engineers, salesman, mechanics, captains, etc. These connections can help you in the sales process but also well into your journey as a new yacht owner. It is a perk to be able to take advantage of your yacht broker’s local relationships.

5

You’ll get nothing but the truth.

Yacht brokers make their living from the relationships they create. What does that mean for you? Your broker won’t do anything to sour your relationship or their reputation. That means you’ll get great service, but more importantly, honest service.
