What to eat when wearing dental braces

If you are undergoing teeth straightening treatment and have a new dental brace fitted, you’re probably already aware of some of the tips and tricks that can make the experience a little easier.
Knowing what is best to eat plays an important part in successful teeth straightening, so to help you along, we’ve listed a few food products that will be kinder to your teeth during the time you wear a dental brace, saving you from unnecessary pain and helping you to maintain a healthy and varied diet.

As you can imagine, harder fruits like apples are best avoided whilst wearing dental braces but there are a range of alternative options available. These include softer fruits such as bananas, grapes and strawberries that are less likely to become stuck in the braces whilst chewing.

While uncooked vegetables such as carrot and parsnips are usually off the menu when you have dental braces, they are much easier to eat when boiled. There is also a wide selection of softer options available for vegetable lovers, such as avocado and mashed potato.

You will probably find it is easy to eat a range of meat products while you wear a dental brace, providing you are careful about how these products are cooked. Avoid eating tough or gristly cuts of meats and remember to remove the fatty or stringier parts that could get stuck in your braces.

From rice and oatmeal to pasta and soft bread, there are plenty of great options to choose from if you want to maintain your grain intake during teeth straightening treatments. It is always best to drink water with these types of meals, so you can move any potential food debris from your mouth.

Dairy products are generally very soft and easy to chew, making them an excellent option for dental patients wearing a brace. Foods such as milk, yoghurt and cheese are all safe to enjoy, and you can even enjoy ice-cream providing your teeth are not too sensitive.
