Here's a list I put together on my list of kayaking essentials for your next adventure into the outdoors. I've tried a couple of these myself (highly recommend anything from Helly Hansen), but have had gleaming reviews from fellow kayakers for the other items!
The Apollo is both a waterproof and breathable top layer, with twin layer reinforcement panels and fully adjustable neoprene waistband to ensure that you're as dry as you are comfortable.
A latex inner wrist seal reduces the likelihood that water will get in, but just in case it does - laser cut drainage holes mean that it won't be for long. The Apollo has reflective detailing on both the front and back, as well as reflective piping on the shoulders and a deployable hi-vis hood to ensure you're safe and seen.
The Yak Sumit is a stylish and high-performance cag with breath-ability and waterproofing built in. Adjustable wrist cuffs with polyurethane lining keep arms snug and dry. DX10K 2.5 layer fabric keeps the cag breathable while ensuring that you're as comfortable as possible on the water. This is definitely a cag to consider if you're serious about your kayaking.
Helly Hansen jackets are some of the best top layers available for kayaking and sailing. I can't recommend them enough and the Crew model is great as an everyday jacket that also performs well on the water. Durable water repellency treatment and Helly Tech performance mean that every trip is as dry as the last. Zip up pockets keep your belongings safe on the water. A Helly Hansen crew jacket might just be the ultimate cag and the midlayer model with additional fleece also comes recommended by The Paddler.
The Helly Hansen active flow pant is a high performance base layer that wicks away moisture while being versatile for a range of water-based activities. I personally love this base layer for kayaking for the freedom of movement that it gives me on the water.
The Typhoon Yalu is a ergonomic and unrestrictive buoyancy aid which is perfect for those looking for comfort and performance. This aid is aimed at both kayakers and sailers making it versatile as well as functional. Fully adjustable straps and webbing keep things snug, with a quick release front clasp in case you find yourself in trouble. This aid is lightweight, with foam panels on the back and front to provide ultimate buoyancy.
The Yak Blaze 50N is a buoyancy aid with a high cut and slim line design as well as elastic side panels for maximum mobility. This aid is front zipped with adjustable shoulders for access and comfort. Those looking to head out onto the water without fear should look no further than the Yak Blaze 50N!
