Picture Books about Dogs

This is a list of children's picture books that celebrate all things canine! These are all great books about dogs that I've reviewed and recommend, or had suggested to me.

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by Lynley Dodd - Penguin Books Australia

The classic story in a new, larger format. Hairy Maclary goes off for a walk with a few of his friends - and comes up against a nasty surprise in the shape of Scarface Claw! There are so many excellent books about dogs in this series.

Barney

Barney

"Barney loves cat food. Barney loves greens. Barney loves bacon and biscuits and beans..."

The Book Chook: Children's Book Review, Gaston

From the publisher: "This is the story of four puppies: Fi-Fi, Foo-Foo, Ooh-La-La, and Gaston. Gaston works the hardest at his lessons on how to be a proper pooch. He sips—never slobbers! He yips—never yaps! And he walks with grace—never races! Gaston fits right in with his poodle sisters.

But a chance encounter with a bulldog family in the park—Rocky, Ricky, Bruno, and Antoinette—reveals there’s been a mix-up, and so Gaston and Antoinette switch places. The new families look right…but they don’t feel right. Can these puppies follow their noses—and their hearts—to find where they belong?" Read my review at The Book Chook.

Antoinette

From the publisher: "Antoinette—a very special poodle—learns to follow her heart and be herself in this charming companion to Kelly DiPucchio and Christian Robinson’s beloved Gaston." Read more at The Book Chook.

Sad, the Dog

"ad, the Dog is a children’s picture book that stays with us long after we’ve read it. It introduces us to a little dog who has owners who feed and wash him. But we don’t see them play with him, and they’ve never bothered to give him a name. Even quite young children understand the power of names and naming. They also know what it’s like to have your creative efforts misinterpreted, and will empathise when the unhappy dog whispers a name in his heart: Sad. " Read more at The Book Chook.

The Brown Dog

From the publisher: "The brown dog often visits Henry on rainy, grey afternoons. Usually he doesn’t hang around for long.
But this time the brown dog decides to stay, and Henry needs to find a way to make him leave." Read more at The Book Chook.
