The Maldives sounds like the perfect destination for your summer vacation. Here are some facts about this paradise island to make your trip even more insightful.
The Republic of Maldives is comprised of about 1190 islands, that have been generously sprinkled across the Indian Ocean. Be sure to get a window seat on the airplane to witness the islands scattered around, to form a chain. You could see the white sandy beaches surrounded by the sea in different shades of green and blue. It certainly is a picturesque view.
Some of the islands are artificial; they are man-made. A good example is the island named Huhulmale, that joined the chain of other islands, in 2004. At present, it is a functional city!
Believe it or not, out of the thousand islands, only about 200 islands are inhabited! A few others are simply used as either farmland or for industries. However, mostly, they are used for resorts. Therefore, it is no surprise that there are many a luxury resort in Maldives. The many numbers of resorts available will definitely put you in a dilemma when it comes to planning your holiday! It comprises of a 100% Islamic population. Therefore, do take into consideration that some resorts and shops might be closed during the Ramadan season.
The fact it is a Muslim country means, there are certain rules that everyone should strictly abide by; public display of affection is not just frowned upon but isn't allowed in the law! You are also expected to dress modestly while you're there. However, if you are on resort islands, you are free to wear anything (bathing suits and bikinis) and there's no restriction on public display of affections. So, don't worry, your dream of having a honeymoon in the Maldives is still possible! Just make sure you have a long dress in your tote, should you have to take a sudden trip to the local islands.
The marine life is one of the best in the Maldivian sea. Whale sharks are found year-round in the Southern Atolls. The North has the best viewing for Manta Rays. If you are a marine life enthusiast plus an adrenaline junkie, you might want to try diving with hammerhead sharks as this is probably the only place your wish will be granted. Of course, apart from these, you can stare at awe at the coral reefs, sea turtles and other marine animals.
It comes as no wonder that Maldives is one of the best destinations for snorkelling. Some islands are concaved; this means in some islands, you can quite literally dive under the island! Isn't that quite fascinating?
Summer vacation means sun. Sun means burn and sweat. Therefore, don't forget to pack your sunscreens and a few packets of rehydration salts as this is hard to find in the resort islands, ensure you keep yourself well protected and hydrated.
Do note that since it's a Muslim country, you won't be allowed to bring in pork products or alcohol through customs.
Finally, it is called a dream destination for a reason. To be able to go island hopping, watch the sunrise and sunset from the white powdery beaches or from the bed in a water villa; Maldives certainly offers you a one of a kind holiday experience.
