Must Visit Forts in Oman – Experiencing the Richness of the Omani Forts

Oman is one destination that has a wealth of history to experience. One place where you can enjoy a good dose of this side of Oman is at the forts. Below are some of the most popular forts in Oman.

1

Khasab Fort

Located in the city of Musandam the Khasab fort feels like an oasis of grandeur amidst a desert backdrop. Constructed by the Portuguese all the way back in the 17th century, the fort is a treat to the history buff. The fort was built surrounding an even older circular tower which adds to the structural appeal of this building. Although back in the day the fort played an important role in the governance of the region, today it provides more of a symbolic significance. With a well-equipped museum within the premises, visitors can also enjoy a good dose of the history plus insightful information about the geology, culture flora and fauna of the region.

2

Bukha Fort

The Bukha fort is just 25km from the Khasab and if you are in Musandam this is another attraction worth covering. The Bukha fort has a historical origin that makes it older than Khasab, however, the fort has been extensively renovated and much of the structure that stands today is an effect of the reconstruction that took place in 1990. The biggest highlight of the Bukha Fort is the watch tower which has a characteristic pear shape that has a good reason behind its construction. At the time when the fort was made it actually faced the sea. However, with time, the waters receded, and it is now surrounded by a dry moat on all 3 of its sides.

3

Nizwa Fort

Built-in 1688 by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya'rubi, the fort of Nizwa is what put the city of Nizwa on the map for it once served as the administrative seat of authority for the presiding Imams. Built above a complex underground system, the construction of the Fort took around 12 years. Today the fort stands as a symbol of strength that stood tall during some of the most turbulent times of the nation.

4

Nakhal Fort

This Fort is located in Al Batina and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Located on the rocky surface of the Western Hajar, this fort stands at a height of 200 meters right atop the Hajar Mountains. The castle was built somewhere between the 3rd to the 10th century and is one of the most profound attractions in all of Oman

5

Bahla Fort

The Bahla Fort is impressive in appearance. Large and complex, the fort in its entirety is a haven to explore. For obvious reasons, this fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has after all walls that stretch over 7 miles and most of this were constructed between the 13th and 14th century period. Even if you are based in Muscat the Bahla fort is well worth the few hours it takes to get here. If you are planning a trip to this fort there are many Oman luxury resorts you can be based in. The Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort is one property that is definitely worth considering. From the exquisite architecture to the intricate interiors, this sand-coloured masterpiece offers plenty for visitors to take in. Just a tour around this fort will take you through a vivid journey back time offering you a glimpse of the grandeur that dominated this bygone era.
