5 of the Most Beautiful Spots in Sri Lanka - Explore the Stunning Architecture and the Natural Beauty of the Island

Enjoy some of the most iconic spots in the island of Sri Lanka. From the beauty of Nuwara Eliya and Jaffna to the architectural significance of Kandy and Sigiriya: there is something for everyone.

1

Nuwara Eliya

Nestled in the heart of the hill country is the beautiful town of Nuwara Eliya. While the destination itself is stunning, the journey to get there is also quite the experience. Since Nuwara Eliya is located atop the central highlands, and is, therefore, situated at quite a height above sea level, those who wish to visit will have to drive through the mountains along long winding roads that entertain steep cliffs on the right. As you drive through the mountains, you will be able to see stunning views of the lowland areas and, on a particularly clear day, you may even be able to catch a glimpse of the Indian Ocean. The drive will also take you through tea estates and the odd waterfall. Once you get to Nuwara Eliya, you will be able to enjoy the pleasant climate, a spot of golf if you so wish, and many strolls through fragrant and colourful parks that sport numerous flowers.

2

Islands in the Jaffna Peninsula

Since the conclusion of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka, many locals, as well as tourists, make their way to Jaffna to explore the Peninsula. Many locals also visit Jaffna in order to visit the famed Nallur Kovil as well as the Nagadeepa Temple. While the Nallur Kovil is found within the Jaffna Town, the Nagadeepa Temple is located on an island and involves taking a public ferry or a private boat. A number of roads also connect these islands and driving along them, with the sea on both sides of the road, gives you the impression of being in the middle of the Indian Ocean itself.

Arthur's Seat in Kandy

Surrounded by mountains, the town of Kandy is found in the Central Highlands. The town is home to the Dalada Maligawa i.e. the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a place of religious importance to the Buddhists in the country. The Temple is located right next to the Kandy Lake as well. Those who wish to have a bird's eye view of Kandy should make their way to Arthur's Seat for the view from this vantage point is stunning and beautiful.

Adam's Peak

The tourist and local attraction is known as Adam's Peak has religious significance to almost all the faiths in the island. As a result, many people ascend the peak for various reasons and it is considered to be one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka. The best way to climb Adam's Peak is to climb through the night in order to witness the sunrise in the morning from the summit.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

A place that is of historical and architectural importance in Sri Lanka is the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. It is an iconic site that is visited by almost everyone who travels to the island. While many opt to drive to Sigiriya, travellers who have little time to waste can opt to fly there via domestic private airlines such as Cinnamon Air which will shave off a considerable amount of travel time. While Sigiriya was used as a monastery by monks a long time ago, its most iconic use is as the palatial fortress of King Kasyapa.
