Steps Involved in the Investment Casting Process

At American Casting Company, we possess several years of experience in investment casting. We produce investment castings from both non-ferrous and ferrous metals in the required specifications for medical, aerospace, and other critical industry applications at our foundry. Take a look at our infographic to learn about the steps involved in investment casting process.

1

Create Wax Pattern

A pattern that replicates the finished part geometry is made using one of two primary methods:
a. Build a wax injection die
b. 3D print pattern

2

Wax Injection (if injection die is used)

Melted wax is injected into a die cavity to create a master wax pattern.

3

Wax Assembly

Assemble the patterns onto runners and into a finished tree.

4

Slurry Coating

Dip the assembly into ceramic slurry to begin the shell building process around the wax tree.

5

Stuccoing

Particles of sand are deposited onto the wet tree assembly to create thickness and strength around the wax assembly.

6

Repeat

Repeat steps 5 & 6 until the desired shell thickness is achieved. Allow the assembly to set and completely dry.

7

Dewaxing

Remove the wax from inside the shell using a steam autoclave or flash fire oven.

8

Casting

Pour molten metal into the mold cavity and allow to cool.

9

Shell Removal

Remove the mold material by vibration or mechanical blasting processes

10

Cut Off

Cut the finished parts off the runner system

11

Finishing

Employ different finishing techniques such as grinding and sand-blasting to finish the parts per customer specifications

12

Inspection

Inspect the final product to ensure the parts meet dimensional, metallurgical and visual requirements
