Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is home to glitzy pubs, mega malls, classy restaurants and ancient temples. However, listed below are facts not generally discussed, but are just as interesting!

The Thai Name for Bangkok is Extremely Long

The name Bangkok is famous across the world for being Thailand's capital city. But ask the locals and you will be surprised to learn the city is better known as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. This, however, is the abbreviated version, for Bangkok, actually has the world's lengthiest name for a city. The name is a mouthful, to say the least, hence, the abbreviation. What is it? Well here goes, take a deep breath folks; "Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahinthara Yutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amonphiman Awatansathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukamprasit"! No wonder plain and simple 'Bangkok' is popular the world over.

It is the Nation's Largest City

The largest city in Thailand, the population of Bangkok makes up about 13% of the nation's population. However, Bangkok is considered small, population-wise, in comparison to top cities across the world, and is quite the opposite of the illusion it exudes of an overcrowded and busy city. Bangkok is currently ranked 24th largest city and falls behind the likes of Beijing, Moscow, Shanghai, New York etc. From towering malls and impressive skyscrapers to luxurious hotels and Bangkok serviced apartments this dynamic metropolis is truly unique.

Bangkok is Ranked One of the World's Most Popular Cities

Apart from the local population, one can look at the staggering number of tourists who visit Bangkok on a regular basis. The place attracts visitors from across the world and is even more popular than the likes of Paris. Accommodation too is world standard, with the likes of Anantara Baan Rajprasong Bangkok Serviced Suites, and other such properties owned by well-known hotel chains, being popular choices across the city.

Bangkok is Made Up of 50 Cities

The city is cut across by the Chao Phraya River; it consists of 50 districts. Thirty five of them are located on the eastern side of the river while 15 are found on the western banks of the mighty Chao Phraya River. Best of all, these 50 districts are divided into a staggering 169 sub-districts.

The Chao Phraya is the Cherry on the Cake

The Chao Phraya River is just as important as the River Thames is in London to the Thai's. Winding its way across the heart of the city, this is Bangkok's lifeblood and is better known as the 'River of Kings'. Once a main throughway, the river is a great attraction for tourists, with some of the best attractions lining its banks. In the 1500's a series of canals were built around the city, connecting to the river, in order to make travel faster and easier for locals. Exploring these canals or khlongs is quite a treat if you like a glimpse into the Bangkok of yore.
