Best Things to See in Salalah - The Land of Aroma and Natural Wonders Like Sinkholes!

Salalah, the largest city in Oman, is all about its unique culture and history. Though it is a more off the beat destination, it sure will not disappoint. Here are five places to visit.

1

Museum of the Frankincense Land

Frankincense is an aromatic resin and is widely used in incense and perfumes. It is widely popular in the Middle East, especially in Oman as the City of Ubar was once known to be the traded capital of this trade. If you are a curious cat and eager to know the uniqueness and the history, this museum is where you will find answers to. The museum is quite big and will take up some time, so it would be wise to plan it accordingly. There are two halls; Hall of History and the Marine Hall. While it is easy to get lost in the variety of information and artefacts the museum has to offer, do not forget to admire the museum from the outside too; the building itself is unique to Oman and you won't find another similar one elsewhere! The museum is conveniently located near the Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara.

2

Teeq Cave and Tawi Ateer Sinkhole

The Tawi Ateer Sinkhole was only discovered in 1997 by a few Slovenian explorers. Until this, it was not even known to the locals! It is a natural wonder and is the largest sinkhole in the world. Another natural wonder is the Teeq Cave, which is located atop the sinkhole. It is wise to follow a professional guide if you plan to visit both, as it can be a little dangerous. However, it will satiate your wanderlust as the view is extraordinary and the waterfalls nearby will certainly lure you into paying them a visit.

3

Wadi Darbat

Situated in the eastern side of Salalah is this beautiful valley and lake, a view that will be appreciated by any mountain lover. Best visited during autumn to witness the water from wadi descend along the mountains forming a spectacular waterfall that cascades from about 100 feet up. You can take a boat ride and feed fishes in the lake. A popular activity by the tourists is to set up a barbecue in this area. It is kid friendly and a perfect place to visit with your family. You will also find camels at the river bank.

4

Taqah Castle

It's deemed one of the most beautiful and popular castles in Oman. It was once a Tribal leader's residence. And now, it showcases some tools and weapons that were part of the ancient Omani life. The castle has a special viewpoint for the sunset, so make sure you don't miss it!

5

Salalah Festival

Celebrated to welcome the monsoon season when the temperature drops and the sky opens up with rain, turning the land into a lush greenery. The Omanis are ready with their traditional and cultural shows especially for the tourists who flock to the city during this season. Since its peak time, make sure that your accommodation is booked well in advance. There are many a Salalah resort one could choose from and it is wise to plan ahead to avoid disappointment!
