Summer Reading 2018 - Novels in Verse

Some of my favorite, most powerful reads this year were written in verse. Looks like poetry, reads like the best novel you've ever read!

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

Xiomara Batista never feels like anyone truly hears her. With an opportunity to join a slam poetry club, she risks her relationship with her mother, her brother, her secret boyfriend, and her faith to participate and finally be heard.

Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough

Based on the true story of artist Artemisia Gentileschi whose father takes credit for her paintings, but then is one of her only defenders in her rape trial. This story takes place in 1610, but feels as though it could happen now.

For Everyone by Jason Reynolds

Reynolds’ ode to creativity and reaching for your dreams. Short, but something you could read every day to arm yourself for the day ahead.

Rebound (The Crossover 0.5)

Did you love The Crossover? Me too. In Rebound, Kwame Alexander goes back in time to 1988 to tell the story of Chuck Bell, father to twins Josh and Jordan Bell, lover of jazz, and smooth moves on the basketball court.
