If you've got some extra love and joy to spread around, visit the Bodhi Dog and Rescue Shelter. An organization that rescues stray animals from the harsh streets with the aim of rehoming them to provide a better life for them. You can volunteer or spend the day hugging the puppies and kittens at the shelter. The shelter is located within the Pahlok Buddhist Temple premises. This project was established to rescue and rehabilitate gibbons before releasing them back into the Thailand Forest. It has been in operation since 1992 and is a great way to spend the day! Keep in mind that this is not a zoo and petting gibbons are not allowed, as they are wild animals. However, it's a wonderful place to learn about the species, the threats it faces in the wild and you get to see some gibbons too! The project is located in the Khao Pra Theaw area at the Bang Pae Waterfall. An observation platform created inside gives you a great opportunity to view the gibbons here, and its open daily from 9 am to 3 pm. Always listen to the volunteers' instructions.
Another way to be an ethical tourist! Visit the Soi Dog Foundation and play with the dogs and cat, roughly about 50,000 of them! The foundation spays and neuters, vaccinates, shelters and offer medical treatment to the helpless animals in Phuket. You can even adopt one or encourage someone else to adopt an animal from this shelter. Those looking to volunteer and give back to society can register themselves as a volunteer during their holiday in Phuket.
