List of places with a unique experience – Beyond the beach

Phuket is more than the white sandy beaches and iconic nightlife it's famous for. Here is a list of things you can do to have a unique experience during your stay in Phuket, Thailand.

1

Muay Thai training

Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand. There are a number of training camps available for those with a keen interest to practice or learn this ancient martial art. It's a mental and physical discipline and is often referred to as the "art of eight limbs" where you are trained to use your elbows, fists, knees, shins and feet during sport. You need to have an average level of fitness if you want to learn the art of Muay Thai. Sinbi Muay Thai and Tiger Muay Thai are two of the most popular training schools that locals and tourists go to, to learn this ancient martial art.

2

Tarzan adventures

Ever wanted to imitate Tarzan and swing over treetops screaming your lungs out?! Here's the chance. Phuket has a number of ziplining stations that offer scenic views of the Andaman Ocean, lush rainforests and the Ao-Yon Khaokhad beach.

3

The Bodhi Dog and Rescue Shelter

If you've got some extra love and joy to spread around, visit the Bodhi Dog and Rescue Shelter. An organization that rescues stray animals from the harsh streets with the aim of rehoming them to provide a better life for them. You can volunteer or spend the day hugging the puppies and kittens at the shelter. The shelter is located within the Pahlok Buddhist Temple premises. If you don't have time to visit, make a small donation to this charity!

4

The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project

This project was established to rescue and rehabilitate gibbons before releasing them back into the Thailand Forest. It has been in operation since 1992 and is a great way to spend the day! Keep in mind that this is not a zoo and petting gibbons are not allowed, as they are wild animals. However, it's a wonderful place to learn about the species, the threats it faces in the wild and you get to see some gibbons too! The project is located in the Khao Pra Theaw area at the Bang Pae Waterfall. An observation platform created inside gives you a great opportunity to view the gibbons here, and its open daily from 9 am to 3 pm. Always listen to the volunteers' instructions.

5

Soi Dog Foundation

Another way to be an ethical tourist! Visit the Soi Dog Foundation and play with the dogs and cat, roughly about 50,000 of them! The foundation spays and neuters, vaccinates, shelters and offer medical treatment to the helpless animals in Phuket. You can even adopt one or encourage someone else to adopt an animal from this shelter. Those looking to volunteer and give back to society can register themselves as a volunteer during their holiday in Phuket. Luxury villas in Thailand are in abundance, and if you're staying at Kata Rocks or another similar property, don't forget to ask them the best way to get to here.
