7 secret beach escapes in Sri Lanka – Little sandy heavens

Sri Lanka has seen an immense growth in tourism over the past few years and for good reason too. To know where you can have the best kind of beach vacations on this island, read on.

1

Pigeon Island

When in Sri Lanka, beach holidays are a given, but getting the help of a tour agency the likes of Walkers Tours is a good idea when you want to plan the perfect vacation. You can add places you want to see and customise your itinerary, and when you do, do not forget to add Pigeon Island to the list of places to see. Situated on the east coast of the harbour town Trincomalee, this island is a well-protected nature reserve and national park. You will be taken to the island on a boat and once you get there, you will be able to experience the almost untouched pristine sands and clear blue waters. The coral reefs in and around this island are nothing short of awe-inspiring and if you ever have the time to visit the Pigeon Island, try your hand at snorkelling here.

2

Arugam Bay

Close to the Pigeon Island area, Arugam Bay is one of the most popular beaches in Sri Lanka. Known for its amazing surf spots and near-perfect waves, Arugam Bay is the place to be at if you love beach vacations that come with nightlife.

3

Mirissa Beach

When you are in South of Sri Lanka, Mirissa is a beach you will be recommended to visit for sure. This exotic sandy beach makes for an amazing photo opportunity, with mesmerising sunsets and endless views of the deep blue sea. Quieter than most beaches in Sri Lanka, the Mirissa beach is perfect for those who like languid vacations in which they lounge by the water and blaze about while they chill all day. The people you will see at this beach town are chilled and are pretty laidback too.

4

Tangalle Beach

Found on the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka, the views here are not the usual straight lines; they are curved, as this beach is right at the bottom end of the country. The freshwater lagoon stretches of golden sands and bright blue water make for an extremely scenic vacation point. You will also find majestic cliffs with drop ends that show you the cavernous seas below, with waves crashing so loud it sounds like a thunderstorm. If you want to explore the town of Tangalle, you can visit the Rest House too.

5

Rekawa Beach

A few kilometres away from Tangalle, the Rekawa Beach is a unique experience indeed. The best time to visit would be from April to September as the weather is near perfect at this time with turtles being spotted on the beaches here. You can also volunteer at a turtle conservatory and do your part to the marine life when you are on vacation thus taking back great memories and an even better sense of having done the right thing for the future ocean life.
