Backchannels

Backchannels are a great place for students to post questions during instruction, get homework help, or just to allow the quietest and most shy students a voice.

Backchannel Chat

Free profanity filter and no advertising. Student information is not required. App and web versions are available. Free version offers 30 students at once and one room, but upgrading to a paid version gets you more features.

Very short answers (<40 characters) are allowed, but all answers are put into a word garden, where the most frequently contributed word/phrase is the largest.

Dotstorming

Brainstorming and "dot" voting system -- where users are given a certain number of votes (decided upon by the creator of the board) to spend in any way they'd like.

Exchange messages and files in a chatroom-like location. Owners of the room can delete messages written by their students. Students can register as a guest to avoid putting in an email address.
