Deemed a first class cricket club, the SSC is the islands most successive of all domestic cricket clubs, having won the coveted Premier Trophy more than a staggering 30 times. The club was born after a cricket team formed with a combination of players from Wesley College, Royal College and St, Thomas's College won a match against the Colts Cricket Club Team. It was a one run win, which inspired the winners to create a Sinhalese sports club; thus was born the SSC, a club which still attracts the attention of many newcomers applying for membership. The SSC is located in Colombo 7, easy to access from city apartments such as One Galle Face, and ideal for entertaining guests, catching a cricket match or enjoying some indoor sports.
Colombo Cricket Club is the oldest in the country, as it was founded way back in 1832. Located close to Sri Lanka Cricket in Colombo 7, this club is easy to access from any well-located luxury apartment in the city. The CCC was born of a need to create a cricket club for the British colonists, and it was the CCC cricket team which played Colombo's first cricket match against the 97th Regiment of the British Army. The club which served as a European's only club right up to 1962 celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013. Established in 1873 the Colombo Colts Cricket Club is a premier club which won a total of 6 premier matches in the domestic cricket leagues of Sri Lanka. Originally located in Pettah the club was re-organised in 1886 and based in Havelock Park Colombo 5.
This club was founded by the Moors of Colombo belonging to the Colombo Grand Mosque; which is located at New Moor Street. Moors Sports Club was founded on ethno-religious lines, very much in line with how most other clubs in Colombo were founded. Reserved strictly for the Moor community, the club held its first cricket match between the Moors SC and the Kalutara Town SC. Tennis and billiards, in addition to cricket, are offered at Moors Sports Club.
This club too is home to one of the country's first class cricket clubs. Tracing its root back to the latter end of the 19th century, the Tamil Union was formed when two rival clubs the Athletic Club and Tamil Union Cricket joined forces. This amalgamation took place in 1899, with a very impressive board of members including G N C Ponnambalam, who would later be the Speaker of the Sri Lanka Parliament.
