Are you sick of your job? Perhaps you’re looking for a little extra cash, but need something that provides you with flexible hours. Or maybe you’ve always dreamed of striking, creating your own business, being your own boss. No matter what your situation is, starting a home business selling health products can provide you with a satisfying business opportunity to expand your financial horizon.

One of the advantages of selling health supplements like vitamins is that you don’t really need a lot of capital to get started. In fact, many vitamin or nutritional supplement companies will allow you to buy products on credit, so with a relatively small investment you can start your own business. However, like anything, it’s buyer beware, and you should make sure to do your research and find out what products are selling well before you buy.

For instance, if you live in an area where there are many elderly individuals, selling a multivitamin formulated for seniors is probably a better choice than protein powder targeted toward young bodybuilders. If you don’t already have an idea about the population in your area, a Google search for your city’s last government census should provide you with a basic breakdown of your population.

Once you have an idea about who your target population is, it’s time to track down some product to sell. This isn’t as hard as it sounds. In fact, if you are reading this off of a computer screen, you already possess the tools you need. Simply type in search terms like “selling vitamins,” “health supplements,” “dietary supplements” and a host of other words relating to health supplements, and a whole cavalcade of vitamins, minerals, protein powders, shakes, and dietary supplement companies will be at your fingertips practically begging you to sell their products, and hopefully curing your financial ills period.

Many of these companies will allow you to sell their products online. Using this route has several advantages. First, you won’t have to research your population because you’ll be marketing to almost anyone in the United States!

Another advantage is that many of these companies don’t require you do keep an actual physical inventory at your residence. Instead, they keep the product at a warehouse somewhere, and you do the Internet legwork to promote and sell the product online. This is known as vitamin drop shipping and supplement fulfillment. Sure they take a percentage of your profits, but at least you don’t have to fill your garage with vitamins. If you do decide to have a physical inventory at your household, think about getting into business with several partners so that you can buy in bulk at a cheaper rate.

No matter which method you decide to use, you’ll need to obtain a business license. Most areas consider online storefronts mail order businesses requiring standard business registrations. If you sell directly out of your house, additional licenses may be required. To register your business, contact your local City Clerk.

Many individuals want to sell vitamins online but find the whole process intimidating.  “I don’t know how to program, so how can I possibly set up a site?” they ask.  Well, it’s a lot simpler than many people think.  In fact, if you have a Facebook or Myspace account, then setting up a web page will be second nature.  And if you don’t, no worries, there’s tons of free support software out there to show you how step-by-step.

The first thing you need to do when you are creating a website is register a “domain name.”A domain name is that thingy that you type in to go to a website (e.g. ).  You can register a domain name at many different sites, but some of the most popular are “GoDaddy” (, “Yahoo Business”, “” (, and “directNIC” (  Prices for domain registration are pretty cheap, and usually range between $3-$20.  Of course, if you don’t mind your website domain including the name of the site you purchased it from, you can often get free domains (i.e.

When you are choosing a domain name, think carefully.  You want the name to be easy to remember and reflect the type of business you are running.  Avoid the classic mistake of many newbies to e-commerce and stay away from naming your site some long name that is difficult for customers to remember (i.e. and opt for something that’s simple and reflects your business (i.e.

Once you’ve settled on a domain name and steered clear of naming it after your pet or favorite Guns ‘N Roses song, it’s time to actually create your site.  “What?” you ask, “Didn’t I just register my domain, and isn’t that my site?”  Nope.  All that you’ve done at this point is reserve the location of your site.  It’s kind of like purchasing an address in a city—no one else can now “build” on that particular site, but then again, neither can you until you actually buy the property to build on.  In this case, “property” takes the form of an Internet “hosting” agent in which you can construct your site.  Most websites that sell domain names also host sites (all of the ones previously listed do), so this process is pretty painless.  Web hosts usually charge a monthly or yearly fee and you can often get deals for purchasing longer periods of time.  If you don’t mind your web host placing ads on your site, you can also get free hosting from a wide variety of providers.

After you have your domain and your host site set up, it’s time to actually build your site.  This is where most people panic.  “There’s no way I’m going to be able to learn how to build a website!” they say, turning off their computer and leaving the room for a nice non-electronic book.  Don’t freak out like this! There are millions of people out there just like you, and web developers have created “templates” for you to use.  A template is like a pre-fab website, ready to go once you enter the info to personalize the site.  Working on many templates is pretty similar to uploading information to sites like Facebook or MySpace.

There are also companies that offer a one stop shop website hosting, design, and shopping cart solution (i.e. Volusion.) For a monthly charge ranging from $19.95 to $150 and a minimal fee per transaction these companies will do 99% of the work needed to start and maintain a successful vitamin supplement website. This option is best for companies looking to offer many products and need an integrated system for managing customers, advertising, affiliates, and even coupons.

All of the sites listed above have free web building tools included with their hosting services.  Some other quick and easy website templates can also be found on Website Tonight (, and FreeWebsiteTemplates (

So now that you’ve got a domain, a web host, and created a website, you can kick back and watch all that money roll in, right?  Wrong.  You need to register your website with search engines.  Registering with a search engine is like putting your name in the phone book—unless it’s there only your friends and family will be able to find you.  In the past, there used to be many, many different search engines, so registering a website was a real pain.  Nowadays there are really only two kids on the block to worry about:  Google and Yahoo.  To register on Google visit and for Yahoo.  Best of all, both of these services offer search engine registration absolutely free.

If you are ready to submit your website now, please take advantage of this Free Submission Tool:

Congratulations!  You’ve become a part of the worldwide network of vitamin supplement e-commerce!
Now are we finally done?  Yes and no.  People on the web expect new and different content every time they visit a website, so in addition to continually offering the best new products, think about adding a fun or interesting article here and there.  And as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, but on the net an interesting picture may be worth a thousand views (and every view is a potential customer).  Check out other websites that you like and get a feel for the layout of text and pictures.  It will take time, but before you know it you’ll be driving customers to your website, and you may just learn enough to talk-tech with that precocious computer-wiz nephew of yours!

The May/June publication of “Natural Products Insider” mentions bitter orange
(as Advantra Z) as being a key thermogenic ingredient in helping with weight loss.

Bitter orange is actually a plant and the oil is made from its peel. However, the juice, leaf, fruit, peel and flower are also used to create ingredients. It can be consumed or applied to your skin and may help with many different ailments.

Thermogenic ingredients help to boost weight loss and raise your metabolism. Thermogenesis is the way heat is produced in the body and this boosts your resting metabolic rate.

Beta-3 receptors are activated by bitter orange and that’s how thermogenesis is triggered in the first place. While you’re working out, your muscles are broken down and then, as you recover, they build up again. If you use bitter orange (as Advantra Z) and also consume caffeine, you’ll decrease the stress associated with exercise in adults.

In 2011, a study conducted in the US revealed that if you consumed bitter orange extract (as Advantra Z) along with green tea extract and caffeine, your fat oxidation would increase but there wouldn’t be a higher level of stress in your cardiovascular system.

Bitter orange may help clear up fungal infections and athlete’s foot when applied to the affected areas. It may also help reduce nasal congestion and ease an upset stomach.

The flower and oil may be used to heal gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea, constipation, gas, intestinal ulcers and blood in your stool. It may help to reduce blood sugar levels for those with diabetes. It may also help with diseases of the bladder, kidneys, gallbladder and liver.

Vitamix Laboratories, a dietary supplement manufacturer, offers a liquid supplement, VitaSlim Ultra, which includes a safe dosage of bitter orange extract (Advantra Z). VitaSlim Ultra is available for Private Labeling, with very low minimums. This product comes in a 2oz. bottle with dropper, and is very convenient and affordable to brand with your logo and company information.

According to an article published by researchers Brian Feldman and Peter Malloy in 2013 in the Modern Endocrinology magazine- “Obesity reflects an imbalance between energy storage and energy expenditure and is strongly associated with metabolic and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, there are important medical and biological implications for elucidating the mechanisms that promote energy expenditure in humans.”

If you intend to market weight loss products containing bitter orange, Vitamix Laboratories is the ideal place to assist with your Private Label requirements.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most plentiful catechin in tea and is a very powerful antioxidant that can help with lots of different health issues. Well-known TV doctor, Dr. Oz, recently revealed that drinking green tea (containing the highest amount of EGCG) may help to reduce the risk of contracting many forms of cancer and, specifically, ovarian cancer.

Apart from water, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. A study conducted in China with over 1000 women who drank four or more cups of green tea or oolong tea per day showed that their risk of contracting ovarian cancer reduced by a whopping 82%.

Tea Leaves

Click here to check out our Private Label Green Tea Extract Liquid.

Based on published research, it appears that the cancerous cells are destroyed by the EGCG in the tea before they have the chance to spread through the ovaries and to other parts of the body. It’s important to understand that although this article is only about ovarian cancer, it appears EGCG may also greatly reduce the risk of contracting many other forms of cancer at the same time.

Dr. Oz’s guest on his show, Dr. William Li, is a cancer researcher. He explained that tea also contains flavonoids, which account for approx. 1/3 of the weight of the tea. EGCG is the most powerful of all flavonoids. It’s a core constituent of both oolong and green tea and it can potentially kill ovarian cancer cells before they can spread.

Studies have shown that EGCG causes a process known as apoptosis to occur in cancerous cells. This process (apoptosis) means “the death of a cell” and means it prevents cancer cells in ovaries, the liver, prostate, breasts and lungs from growing and multiplying while protecting the healthy cells from additional attacks.

The substance hinders DNA methyltransferase and telomerase, two enzymes that are involved in cellular immortality and cancer gene expression thus meaning that the cells are no longer immortal.

It’s obvious that everybody wants to avoid getting all forms of cancer. Even the smallest cancerous cells can cause a wide array of problems and result in surgery and/or chemotherapy and other treatments. Whether it’s benign or malignant is also a huge issue for anybody who is diagnosed to face.

Having surgery for cancer can be extremely painful but it’s the recovery time that can be even more difficult to manage, depending on the severity of the disease. Regardless, there will be a period of healing and, hopefully, the cancerous cells will be removed.

Vitamix Labs

If you can avoid having surgery or chemotherapy in the first place, wouldn’t you drink some tea or take a regular green tea extract? This is obviously a rhetorical question.

Lots of people don’t like drinking tea for whatever reason. The positive news is that you can also get a green tea extract that contains 45-50% EGCG and take that instead of drinking lots of tea.

Vitamix Laboratories is a dietary supplement and vitamin manufacturer specializing in custom formulated products and private label supplements. This means that you can purchase a finished product, Green Tea Liquid Extract for example and we’ll create a new label containing all the product information and details about your company. Then you can sell these healthy green tea liquid products and make a tidy profit, while potentially helping people fight cancer, one of the harshest diseases known to man.

Vitamix Labs is a global company supplying more than 27 different brands in nine different countries around the world with their private label supplements. These brands are all dedicated to helping as many people to be free of cancer as possible. Surely there’s no nobler cause to be part of than that. The work has been done for you by Vitamix Labs so you don’t need to worry about manufacturing… focus your efforts on marketing. You have access to a premium supplement manufacturer any time you need them. There’s no need for storage or shipping because Vitamix Labs takes care of it all.

We’ve worked with many nutraceutical startups over the years, and time after time we hear that one of the most beneficial services we provide is our checklist of things to do before launching a nutritional supplement or vitamin product. With this in mind, we’ve decided to post a “launch checklist” so that you can focus you attention on post-launch sales rather than cleaning up problems that could have been resolved with careful planning prior to launch. Although this isn’t an exhaustive checklist, it should serve as a good starting point as you begin to conceptualize the direction and focus of your company and decide how you want to market your product. Whether you are trying to open a home business selling vitamins, or simply expanding your website to sell supplements online, this checklist will help get you on the way to success.

As you go through the following list, be sure to write out any ideas or questions that you have on a notepad. These notes will allow you to focus on areas of your business plan that need to be formulated more concisely and will give you a better understanding of different issues that may require further research.

(A) Business Concept and Strategy:
Formulation Do you know if you want your product formulated as a powder, pill, or a liquid supplement? Do you have any special requests such as enteric coating or added dyes? Make sure that you have at least 3 solid selling points over your competition from a formulation standpoint (i.e. “my protein pills are better for building muscle because they contain…”). In addition to ingredients used, you can also promote the benefits of your supplement’s delivery methods (i.e. liquid vitamins vs. pill vitamins).
Advertising and Sales Channel Plans Determining your target audience is tremendously important in marketing your product. This will not only determine how you advertise, but where. For instance, if you are marketing a body building supplement, you may leave brochures at a gym describing how your supplement promotes muscle growth. Or if you are trying to sell a multivitamin for women, you may set up a website about your vitamin with articles about women’s health.
It’s also important for you to determine if you want to sell directly-to-customers (DTC) or through retail channels. Although you can obviously do both, it helps to direct your attention to one or the other so that you can focus your resources.
(B) Formulation and Production:
NDA Signed Do you have a NDA signed by each supplement manufacturer that priced your formulas?
Ingredients Identified Have you identified the exact sources and standardizations for all of the ingredients that you are looking for price quotes on?
(C) Production:
Contract Did you sign a formulation agreement with your contract vitamin manufacturer?
Manufacturer Legally Allowed to Manufacture Nutritional Supplements Have you seen any paperwork from a reputable governing authority (State Department of Health, Food and Drug Administration) showing that the manufacturer is legally allowed to manufacture nutritional supplements? Research your manufacturer online and insist that they show you any pertinent credentials.
Obtain a Pre-production Sample Have you obtained a pre-production sample of the product before purchasing a full production run? This is important so that you know that what you are ordering is exactly what you want. If the color, taste, consistency is off, it’s better for you to know prior to several million units being produced. Also, if you have a pre-production sample and something goes wrong in the actual production run, you can always use this sample as a comparison for that product that you actually wanted produced.
Obtain a Certificate of Analysis Have you received a certificate of analysis for all materials used in the production of your nutritional supplement?
(D) Packaging:
Packaging Presentation Have you decided what images and text that you want to use on your packaging? Do you know who your target audience is for your product?
Samples of bottles or Packets Have you seen samples of the exact size bottle or packet that your product is going in?
Make sure that your product has the exact “look” that you are going for.
(E) Compliance and Information Review:
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Compliance Have you reviewed your label or packaging for all
Domain Name Does your domain name reflect your company or product name? Make sure that this is something that is both easy to remember and has a direct connection to the product you are selling (e.g. don’t name your website after your dog!).
Secure Transactions Is your website secure for transactions and is that illustrated prominently on the website through logos and seals?
Verify Information Have you verified that all contact and order information is correct including product pricing, special offers, phone number and domain names? While a website can help you to promote and sell your product, having a website with the incorrect information on it will frustrate consumers and drive away sales.
(F) Operations:
Tested Mechanism of Deposits Have you “test charged” to make sure that credit cards and funds are deposited into the desired back account without any hiccups or mishaps? Just think how frustrating (embarrassing) it would be to find out that you’ve sold 1,000 units on your first day, but that they’ve all of the funds have been deposited in the wrong bank account! A single missed digit is all it takes, so be sure to do a deposit test run.
(G) Shipping:
Invoices, Packing Slips, and Shipping Labels Can you print out invoices, packing slips, shipping labels and all other documents needed for shipping product? It may seem ok to hand write invoices now, but when you get orders for hundreds of vitamins, it’s important to have a computerized way of printing out all of your documentation.
(H) Storage:
Protecting Your Product Do you have a cool, dry place to store your supplements out of the sun to protect them prior to delivery to cialis generique customers? It’s important to keep it safe and stable because relatively minor temperature and humidity variations can destroy supplements. If you are working with a vitamin drop shipper, then this won’t be a problem.

When creating a label for a dietary supplement manufacturers and distributors are required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to provide certain information to the consumer. Five statements in particular are necessary on containers and packages of dietary supplements:

The name of the supplement.
The total amount of the dietary supplement
Nutrition labeling
The ingredient list
Company name and business location

In most cases this information must either be on the principal display panel (the front label panel) or on the information panel (the label panel to the right of the primary display panel). The “principal display panel” is the part of the package that is most likely to be seen by the customer when they are purchasing the product. When containers have several surfaces that are acceptable for use as principal display panels, these additional surfaces are classified as alternate principal display panels.

The principal display panel must state what the product is and the net quantity of the product. If the package has several alternate principal display panels, each of these panels must also have this information.
The information panel must contain “Supplement Facts,” the ingredient list, and the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor if this information does not appear on the principal display panel.
If there is insufficient space for this information, some packages can qualify for special labeling provisions designated for “small packages.” Small packages are those packages with less than 12 square inches of space for labeling. Instead of a “Supplement Facts” panel, small packages may substitute a telephone number or address for customers to use. However, a telephone number or address can only be used in place of a “Supplement Facts” panel if there are no claims or nutrition information on the product label.

When including an address on the product label list the street address (if it isn’t included in a city directory or telephone book), the city, state, and zip code. In lieu of the actual address, you may list the address of the principal place of business. Be careful not to place label information that is not mandatory between required information on the information panel (such as a bar code) as it is forbidden by the FDA.

If the nutritional supplement contains items of foreign origin that were imported into the United States, this must be conspicuously indicated on the label. Although no expiration date is required on the label, a company can opt to include this information if it is supported by valid data.

When designing the label, utilize fonts and type sizes that are prominent and easy to read. The FDA requires letters to be at least one-sixteenth (1/16) of an inch in height based on the lower case “o” and not more than three times as high as they are wide. Lettering does need to be in black and white, but it must provide a sufficient contrast with the background.

UPC bar codes can be obtained by visiting the Uniform Code Council and clicking “I Need a UPC Bar Code.”

Searching for a reliable Contract Vitamin Manufacturer for your Nutraceutical Brand?

When you’re submitting a price quote it’s important to educate yourself on the average costs of ingredients and the format of the health supplement you are requesting (powder, pill, liquid etc.).

It’s a lot like buying a car. You wouldn’t just walk on the lot point to some shiny red thing with wheels and say “that one.” You’d do your homework, and research online fuel economy, handling, how well certain cars hold their value over others, and more. And if you were interested in extras, like that new “Bose Surround Sound” system, you’d find out the average cost for this too. Vitamin contract manufacturing is very similar, and it’s important to understand what you are willing to pay for a certain formulation and what “extras” like colors and flavors might cost you.

Before you submit a price quote, you need to have a clear vision of what you want to manufacture, and an approximation of the product’s formula. This will expedite turnaround time for a quote and allow you to get the true cost of your product. Although many companies will offer assistance in formulating your product, you’re likely to get a generic approximation of other products on the market unless you specifically tell them to make something different. Remember, if you really want to make a specialty product that is truly unique you must take control, and specify how you want it made.

The more you know about what you are trying to accomplish through a dietary supplement the easier it will be to direct your viagra sans ordonnance company and employees on how to sell your product. This will also make it easier for your prospective manufacturer or broker to get you the pricing information you need faster and make you a more desirable client.

When you are submitting your formula, be sure to go through this checklist to insure that your price quote is processed as quickly and easily as possible:
What delivery method are you planning on formulating your nutritional supplement?
Do you want your product produced as a liquid, pill, powder, or some innovative mixture (e.g. powder packets included with liquid drinks). It’s important to do a little research here, because some vitamins and supplements may not be available in certain forms. For instance, some vitamins may require enteric coating to be effective, while it may not be impossible to include some in liquid form due to solubility issues.

What dosages are you looking to include per serving?
Do you have sources and standardizations for all ingredients you are using?
If you are making tablets, do you have any special requests like tablet color, time-release, of if you want the tablet pressed with any logo or brand name?
Be sure to do a little research and understand the average costs of things like dying tablets.
If you are making capsules, do you have any special requests like capsules color, enteric coating or laminated artwork for the capsules?
Once again, it’s very important to have a clear vision of what you want your product to look like. Be as descriptive as you can, and include as many technical details as possible.
If you are making liquids, what flavor are you looking to make? Can you compare it to another product that is on the market? Do you know the industry name of the flavor or flavor mixture?
What packaging style are you looking for (i.e. single serve shot, concentrated extract, single serve 8-12 ounces or large multi-dose bottles)?
If you are making powders, what flavor would you like the powder to be? Do you want the powder to be effervescent? Are you interested in packet serving or large bottle serving?
Are you looking for stock bottles to be used or custom packaging?
Have you reviewed your price quote and check it for errors and completeness?
This may seem like a basic step, but it really makes a difference in ensuring that you get your product quote on time as quickly and efficiently as possible. The fewer number of emails we exchange, the faster you can get your product and start selling!

Over the past couple decades millions of Americans have started taking some form of dietary supplement to improve their health and well-being. As defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), dietary supplements not only include the vitamins and minerals that many people are familiar with, but herbs, amino acids, extracts and concentrates, metabolites, and even enzymes that are taken by mouth.

The reasons that people take dietary supplements are as vast and diverse as the supplements themselves. A pregnant mother may take a supplement to aid in the developmental health of her future child while another individual may take supplements to improve or maintain his cardiac health.

Dietary supplements themselves come in a variety of forms such as liquids, powders, tablets, and capsules and can be contained within drinks, health bars, and many other consumable products. Although the main claim or purpose of many of these supplements may be to improve health, the FDA does not classify dietary supplements as “drugs,” and instead categorizes them under “foods.” In general, manufacturers are not required to register their products with the FDA or get FDA approval before making or selling dietary supplements.

The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 controls not only the definition of dietary supplements, but how dietary supplements must be labeled for consumers and a variety of other regulatory activities enforced by the FDA. Under DSHEA, the dietary supplement manufacturer is responsible for making sure that their product is safe before it reaches the consumer market. It also stipulates that a dietary supplement must be labeled clearly and truthfully so that it includes the amount and type of ingredients listed on the label.

Once the product is in the market, the FDA can take action against any unsafe dietary supplements. The FDA also monitors the labels and claims of manufactures and distributors of dietary supplements. Meanwhile, the Federal Trade Commission works closely with the FDA to regulate the advertising of dietary supplements.

In order for the FDA to remove a dietary supplement from the market, it must first show that the product is unsafe. Although the burden of proof rests with the FDA, manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements are required by law to record, investigate, and inform the FDA about serious adverse reactions from their products. While the FDA must be kept informed about the post-market safety of a dietary supplement, there is no FDA requirement that a company disclose this information to the public.

In cases when a “new dietary ingredient” is used, the manufacturer is required to notify the FDA. Following the terms of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, a “new dietary ingredient” is defined as a dietary ingredient that was not marketed in the United States in a dietary supplement before October 15, 1994. In most cases the manufacturer’s notification must simply state that the product containing the new dietary ingredient has been found to be safe under its recommended usages.

In addition to abiding by the rules and regulations set forth in DSHEA and the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act mentioned above, manufactures of dietary supplements must register themselves under the Bioterrorism Act and abide by the comprehensive regulations for Current Good Manufacturing Practices published by the FDA in June 2007.

A drop shipping program allows home retailers to sell vitamins without keeping a physical inventory. It sounds strange at first to be selling a product that you don’t actually have in your possession, but the process is actually quite simple. In a nutshell, you advertise and promote a vitamin product, then when you receive an order, you notify your drop shipper who then sends the product out to your client. Your profit is the difference between what the wholesaler who drop ships changes you, and what you charge your client.

As a first step in utilizing drop shipping, you need to find a wholesaler that has a well developed drop shipment program for vitamins. This is easy to do, and a quick search of the internet will yield several major drop shippers (learn more about Vitamix Labs’ private label products and vitamin drop ship program.) Next, shop around and find out which wholesale is offering the best price for the product you are trying to sell. Because the wholesale market is so competitive, prices will often change from week to week, so it pays (literally) to do your homework and keep abreast of changes in the market.

After you select which wholesaler is the right drop shipper for you, it is time to advertise. Many people utilize websites to promote their products, while others prefer the face-to-face approach. A major advantage of using drop shipping is that you can offer your customers a wide variety of vitamins without having to worry about storing stock or products expiring if they don’t sell in a timely manner. The more experienced vitamin drop ship companies also offer additional design services to create successful ad campaigns. Take advantage of this and build a catalog which is as broad and diverse as the population you are marketing to.

On a technical side note make sure that you are aware of the shipping and handling rates of your drop shipper. While some charge you a flat rate, many will vary their rates according to distance shipped from their facility and the time frame of the request. So watch out and include this cost in your pricing, because a next-day shipment from a San Diego manufacture to Los Angeles might be relatively inexpensive, but a shipment to Nome, Alaska might cost you an arm and a leg!

So for a long time now you have been hearing about neighbors, friend, and relatives starting up vitamin supplement businesses. The idea seems tempting, but is there really monetary success awaiting you in that land of Vitamin-C sunshine and CoQ-10 mountains, or will you get caught in a river of generic multivitamins

Let’s consider the facts.

Our economy is down. There’s very little disputing that, and even by the most optimistic projections, it will likely be several years before we see a substantial recovery. As a sign of the times many people are losing their jobs, and businesses are cutting back on benefits for employees.

So what does all of this have to do with selling vitamins? Well, with all of these layoffs and cutbacks more and more people are finding themselves without health care. At the last count, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that almost 47 million Americans, or 20 percent of the population under the age of 65, were without health insurance in 2008, and that number is steadily rising. As people lose their health care coverage, they are turning to alternative sources of health and fitness, and one of the biggest areas of growth is the vitamin supplement industry.

In a recent article posted by the New York Times, the newspaper reported that a large percentage of Americans are opting for supplements over many more costly prescription medications. The Vitamin Shoppe, one of the largest retailers of vitamins and health supplements in the nation, showed a 20 percent increase in customers in the first quarter of 2009 alone (yes, during a recession), which is 25 percent higher than the increase shown during the last recession in 2001. By all accounts, the vitamin industry is booming, and those with the initiative to start their own vitamin supplement selling business are reaping the rewards.

But isn’t starting a vitamin supplement business time consuming and complicated?

Not at all.

With new drop shipping options, it’s easier than ever to start a vitamin supplement business at home. Many home sellers set up websites and market their product online, responding to orders and emails when they get off of work at their day jobs. And aside from the profits generated by a rapidly growing market, new sellers have the advantage of marketing their vitamins on their own time schedule. This makes selling vitamins ideal for parents who have little time for a second job or people that are just too busy with other things to start up a traditional small business. It also appeals to individuals who are interested in striking out on their own and being their own boss.

However, one of the biggest pros (and cons) of starting a vitamin business, is that your success (or failure) is completely dependent on you. You do the marketing, you do the promotion, you manage how the orders are placed and shipped. This may sound intimidating at first, but this allows you to be completely in control of your own success. In fact, many people have found this so alluring and liberating, that they eventually quit the confines of their 9-5 jobs as their vitamin business took off! With some careful planning and consideration, selling vitamins can cure your financial ills.

Although several vitamin and nutritional supplements are available in both pill and powder form, powder has several advantages over pill supplements.

Like liquid supplements, powder is more rapidly absorbed by the body than a supplement contained in pill form. This is one of the reasons that protein powders are superior to protein pills. Although the topic is hotly debated, many body building experts believe that the ideal time for protein absorption is immediately after exercise. If you take your protein in pill form, your body isn’t able to utilize the protein in the pill for hours.

In addition, many supplements that are available in powder form are soluble, or dissolvable, in water. This allows individuals to take their supplements in liquid form, which is both preferable and easier for many people.

Like pill supplements, the active ingredients and enzymes in powder supplements are stable and can last for a relatively long time. This contrasts with liquid supplements, which sometimes lose their potency over the course of several months. Because powder supplements are often mixed with liquid for consumption anyway, this means that you get the advantages of both a liquid and a pill supplement!

One drawback of powder supplements is that they tend to come in large containers that take up a decent amount of space. However, if this isn’t an issue for you, powder supplements are often much cheaper than either pill or liquid counterparts, and you can frequently get great deals on them through online wholesalers.

So you’ve decided to sell vitamins via the vast online marketplace of the worldwide web? Then check out these five tips so that you don’t drown in the sea of e-commerce!

Know what the top-selling products are. One of the best ways to get an idea of what is really selling well is to ask local vitamin stores or markets what their best selling product is. Sometimes this will vary seasonally (Vitamin-C gets a boost in sales when the cold season hits during the winter), so be sure to keep up on new trends, both by talking to vendors and by searching the net.
Spend money to make money. This might run counter to common sense, but spending money on advertisements can give your vitamin company the boost in sales you’ve been looking for. Just make sure that you understand the audience of the online or print publication you’re advertising in and tailor the message accordingly. For instance, employ an easy laid-back tone in an ad aimed at selling protein powder to young adults, and a more academic tone in ad directed toward selling multivitamins to working professionals.
Be realistic with your expectations. Building a business takes time, and millionaires usually aren’t created overnight. Set small goals for your business (selling ten products a week at first), and then watch to see if you are achieving the growth you expected.
Learn from the success (or failure) of others. Is business booming for one vitamin store in town, but petering out for another? Maybe it’s a difference in product. Take note, and if there seems to be a demand for a certain product, there’s a probably a similar niche on the net. Of course, if the football team is coming to your GNC to buy muscle supplements from the local hottie, you may have a problem.
Make sure that the online market isn’t already flooded with a product that you’re offering. Oftentimes a certain vitamin will become popular and a deluge of other vitamin vendors will jump on the bandwagon. This drives down prices to barely profitable levels. Be wary, and keep an eye out for falling prices

5 tips for selling bodybuilding supplements

Are you trying to pump up the sales of your body building supplements? Then get to work on these five tips for becoming a power seller!

  1. Know the top selling supplements.  A quick search on Google will pull up some of the highest grossing sellers.  However, be sure to look at several websites because many articles will be cleverly disguised ads aimed at selling you a certain company’s product.

  2. Go to your customers and don’t wait for them to come to you.  If you’re a personal trainer, you’re already living the dream, but for the rest of us this may mean doing a little research.  Check out upcoming events in your area, and think about setting up concessions at events involving physical strength and stamina.  You can also make deals with gyms to sell your product, but be ready for hefty concession fees.

  3. Get fitness and bodybuilding bloggers to link to your website.  This doesn’t always require money, and if you already have a professional-looking website some bloggers will be willing to work a reciprocal deal if you place their link on yours.

  4. Market the right product during the right season.  During football season many local youths look to protein powders and supplements that bulk them up.  If you have a marathon that occurs in your area, energy supplements will often become a big seller in the months leading up to the event.  Get to know the activities in your area and market accordingly.

  5. Know your product. This can’t be stressed enough. Most body builders spend hours in the gym each week, and sometimes as much time researching supplements. Don’t be caught out claiming that Creatine burns fat or that Hydroxycut creates muscle. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, you’re likely to lose customers.
