Things not to miss in Sri Lanka – For a complete vacation on the island

Sri Lanka is a tiny island that has a wide array of activities to do and things to see. If you want to have a completely authentic Lankan vacation, there are a few must see and do things when here.

1

Cricket

Maybe it's something in the water, but Sri Lankans love their cricket like it's their national sport. For a real native experience try to watch one of the matches that are happening in the country, or just join any one of the games in the grounds over the weekends. Schools, colleges, and even area teams conduct tournaments and matches throughout the year, so there will be no season in which you will leave Sri Lanka without having the opportunity to watch a cricket match.

2

Adam's Peak

Easily one of the most popular mountains in the country, Adam's Peak is a rare site that all the major religions in the country relate to. Be it a Hindu, Buddhist or Christian, they all have their own religious reasons to make the trip and climb the peak to reach the temple on top. Travellers love to climb the mountain in time to see the sunrise as this is one of the best and most rewarding climbs in the region. When the sun rises, peeking through the clouds and lighting up the hills as far as the eyes can see, everyone goes still and it feels like the world stands still. You can go to Adam's Peak using one of the Sri Lanka domestic flights with many examples such as Cinnamon Air.

3

Galle Fort

If you want to take a look at the Dutch era in Sri Lanka, or if you feel like spending a weekend in a quaint beach town, go to Galle Fort. From trendy restaurants and cafes to boutiques that sell locally handcrafted items, the town has much to offer to its visitors. A visit to the Dutch Fort, the Galle Fort Lighthouse and the beach in the evening will make sure you have the best seat in town to watch the gorgeous sunset.

4

Yala National Park

This is the best place to spend a day in if you are someone who is mesmerised by the wildlife and you love to watch the animals go about their day. From monkeys to elephants, crocodiles, and endemic birds, the Yala National Park has a lot of things to see and photograph. This is the most popular national park the island has to offer.

5

Rice and Curry

No trip to Sri Lanka is complete if you don't taste the plain old rice and curry served in the local restaurants. The white rice, daal side, green leaves, meat gravy and pappadam makes for a spicy and tantalising meal. Made with local spices and vegetables, this is a meal you must not miss. You get a variety of these dishes, where the meat gravy will be replaced with either fish, egg or just fried vegetables. Wash down your meal with a glass of Ginger Beer to complete the experience.
